Rest in peace, Bob and thanks for the laughs.

Indeed. Just like most people know the Skipper name, Jonas Grumby, the
Professor's name Roy Hinkley Jr. and Mary Ann's last name, Summers. I
believe these names were only mentioned once in the pilot. Then there's the
unaired pilot were the 2 girls were secretaries Bunny (Nancy McCarthy) and
Ginger (Kit Smythe), and the Professor was just a high school teacher played
by John Gabriel. A lot of scenes were recycled later in the "new pilot".

Nobody ever called Gilligan anything but 'Gilligan' in the entire
series. His first name, if he had one, was nowhere in the series.
Sherwood Schwartz had it in mind to call him Willy Gilligan at some
point but that's as far as it got.

I figured out the connection. On the hit comedy series Alf, the title
character dreams he is on Gilligan's island, and in a different dream that
he is on the Enteprise.

Well, if we use this group's definition of canon for "Star Trek" (that it
has to be seen/heard in a televised episode, it ISN'T canon for Gilligan.

: Indeed. Just like most people know the Skipper name, Jonas Grumby, the
: Professor's name Roy Hinkley Jr. and Mary Ann's last name, Summers. I
: believe these names were only mentioned once in the pilot. Then there's the
: unaired pilot were the 2 girls were secretaries Bunny (Nancy McCarthy) and
: Ginger (Kit Smythe), and the Professor was just a high school teacher played
: by John Gabriel. A lot of scenes were recycled later in the "new pilot".

The Skipper's name is also mentioned in the second episode, "Home Sweet
Hut" and the Professor's name is also mentioned in the second season
episode "Erika Tiffany Smith to the Rescue" (the one guest starring Zsa
Zsa Gabor).

As for the pilot plot being recycled, what happened was similar to what
Roddenberry did with "The Cage" when it was obvious it could not be aired
as a regular episode because of all the changes. In the first season
episode "Goodbye Island" the castaways heard over the radio that a group
of castaways stranded on an island were being rescued (it turns out it's a
different group of castaways on another island). While they wait for
their rescue, they recall via flashback, the events when they first landed
on the island. Because of the three cast changes between pilot and
series, they couldn't show the entire story as originally shot, but SOME
of the scene we see in this episode ARE from the pilot, such as Gilligan
being dragged across the beach by the large fish he's hooked. Other shots
were redone if one of the "new" cast members was needed.

So except for the reshot scenes, "Gilligan's Island" did pretty much the
same thing with their unusable pilot that "Star Trek" did, and they did it
first. Is this where Roddenberry got the idea?

The pilot isn't "canon" as far as the series goes. Mary Ann doesn't even
appear in it (somebody named 'Bunny' does) and Ginger is a secretary,
not a movie star as she is in the real series.

It wasn't in the pilot anyway. By all accounts, Schwartz said it YEARS
after the series went off the air; he came up with it as an answer to the
question they kept getting at conventions and such.

If it had been in the pilot, it wouldn't have been a mystery. Lots of
people have copies of the pilot, with it's swinging Calypso theme.

Okay, then I'll make it on topic:

It's just like Uhura's first name. If she has one, we don't know it.
Just like Gilligan.

See? Now it's on topic. :)

Oh, here's another way to get it on topic: That Romulan defector from
that TNG ep ('Face of the Enemy') was NOT Bob Denver, no matter how much
it may have looked like him.

I thought we knew Uhura's first name. It's some Swahili name.
Doesn't Kirk murmur it into her ear when they are lying in bed
together in that episode from the second season? You know, the one
where the alien energy creature invades the ship and alters the
mental processes of the crew? The one where McCoy is able to
synthesize a cure from Spock's Vulcan blood cells, even while he
is hallucinating that he is the court physician in the palace of
Lorenzo Di Medici.

The Professor was only called "Professor" or "the Professor" throughout
the series, with one exception. The radio broadcast announcing that
their ship was lost mentioned his name. I don't remember if they also
mentioned 'Willy' at that point as well.
