Almost like losing a family member... [message #120939] Mi, 31 August 2005 14:48

And I do mean almost.

Don't worry, it's nothing life altering but I have lost something near
and dear to me, my old friend, an IBM model M keyboard (the "clicky"
keyboard for those that don't know what I'm talking about), had passed on.

It was born on March 27th 1987 and it died last night about midnight, it
was the first keyboard I ever had when I got my first comp sometime back
in the dim dark reaches of timer and it's sorely missed.

If anyone knows where I can get a replacement for as low a price as
possible, it would be greatly appreciated because I desperately need to
get rid of this loaner mushboard I have to use now and despise.

Anyone that's enjoyed a Model M will know how I feel...

**resists the urge to smash the mushboard as he goes back to fix the
typos it's smaller layout caused**

I'm almost as old as your keyboard!

My first computer had a Model M. I got them (computer & keyboard) back
around '96 from the local university (they were about to throw them out,
so instead they "permanently loaned" them to me). The computer hardly
worked at first, but I managed to extend its life four more years. I
wanted to keep the keyboard but that wasn't an option, we couldn't
return the computer without returning all it's hardware as well.

Actuslly, my current situation is such at the moment that I need
something cheaper than e-bay, which is a service I'm not overly fond of
anyway.

I do indeed.

although I was MOST upset by the demise of mine... I spilled orange juice into it.

"ah, its an indestructible microswitched keyboard" thought I.

not so... the damn things arent really microswitched at all. the way they work is by compressing a thin spring in an overwidth plastic 'running tube' until it distorts. the "click" is the sound of the spring hitting the inner wall of the tube when it distorts.

at the bottom of the spring, a small plastic rocker sits, which tilts and presses a *membrane*

yep, you read it right - its a membrane keyboard!

I dont care though. its STILL the best damn keyboard I ever owned, even if its completely irrepairable when it fails, due to cheap 'melt the plastic tab' construction.

I feel your loss.

Yeah, I'm half tempted, since it's dead anyway, to cut off the melted
"rivets" and try to fix it, then just drill those spines out and replace
them with small screws or somesuch just to see if it can be done.

Might be something as simple as cleaning that "membrane"... dammit I
-need- my tankboard...
