I've just seen this page:
http://mannes.gmxhome.de/ebay/towel/towel.html. This guy has a CD of
DNA reading excerpts from HHGG and LCTS, a ticket to the event he got
it from, and a towel signed by Bop Ad himself (it's not a special
towel, it's just an ordinary, white beach towel - but with the
signature).
He's planning to auction the lot on eBay in an auction starting on
Thursday 8th September. For more details, visit his website.
In other internet-related stuff, ZZ9 Plural Z Alpha (http://www.zz9.org/),
who are, as everybody here should know, the official HHGG appreciation
society, have opened a HHGG news service run via LiveJournal. The link to
the LiveJournal community is http://www.livejournal.com/~zz9 or the link to
the RSS feed for it is http://www.livejournal.com/community/zz9/data/rss.
And that's all for today.

Douglas Adams.
His signature 'traditionally' looks like "Bop Ad".

An interesting novelty, but unless he has documented evidence of the
"signing" - a photo or witness, utterly worthless as anybody could
sign like that.
The CD isn't particularly rare - it was still on sale in Germany a
couple of years back.

Hi!
I'm the *froopy* seller...
Yesterday there was still only one bid of 1 €. I think a signed towel is one
of the best DNA collectibles i could imagine. IMHO, it's much worthier than
a signed book or else.
There might be a some more signed towels out there - I don't think that I've
been the only one asking Douglas Adams to sign a towel, but I don't think
there're a lot of them! Obviously there're a lot more official towels (by
BBC, ZZ9 and/or Disney) - but they're not signed by Bop Ad! I think he
signed an uncounted amount of books - but towels? Can't guess how many there
might be, but I'm sure they're a very few! And who's going to sell his own?
I won't do so if I haven't to - but unfortunately I have to...
Please don't *sass* me for selling my towel. Share and enjoy!
H. Mannes (JustThisGuy)
P.S.: Thank you John for posting my towel here and on your DNA-eBay-Blog.
You're invited on a drink if we meet anytime!

Cool link! Thanks. I've also put it on my new webpage.
Since now I just knew Douglas Adams autograph on my towel. Now I've looked
at your example and searched a bit on the net and found two other
signatures.
Taking in mind that writing on towels is different to writing on paper,
there are some correspondings with the signature on my towel. Especially if
you watch at each letter itself.
All three signatures and the best picture of the towel are online on my new
page: http://mannes.gmxhome.de/ebay/towel/truetowel.html

Your scepsis is legitim. I would ask the same.
You can find more infos about the towel and some pictures on my new TRUE
TOWEL WEBPAGE: http://mannes.gmxhome.de/ebay/towel/truetowel.html
Sorry, I don't have a photo. Just the signature. I had a digital watch, but
no digital cam at that time... (:
Also there's no witness. BTW, a witness could be doubted by you aswell -
anybody could say that he has seen DNA and me, doesn't he?
Sorry, but I can't help - though I did go with some friends to the reading,
but I went alone backstage.
Maybe it's possible to find out who had been the two persons with which DNA
had been together backstage, but I don't think so after all these years.
A CD which is printed only in one country applies as rare, or why are there
so many peaople collecting Japanese, Canadian or CD-issues ? And even here
in Germany it was only available in a special shop-chain. And AFAIK, the CD
is sold out for years now.
Note: the FAQ of this newsgroup includes some infos about the CD.

A white elephant of DNA-collectibles seems to go away as a good bargain.
Auction oft the signed towel less than 24h and there's not even a 'symbiolic
minimum bid' of 42 bucks yet...
Have seen some signed books to sell in the meantime - but not a signed towel
or some like that. How often might there be a possibilty to get one?

Well, I would bid, but I've resigned from HHGG collecting, so someone else
will be the lucky one in this case.

Thanks, John! Still thankful to you for posting this news here.
Didn't want to urge you (or anybody else) to bid. (I wanted to point that
out).
As you could imagine reading my postings, I'm a bit nervous in the moment.
No new comments or questions here on alt.fan.douglas-adams in the last
days... There've been a lot of watchers on the eBay item site, but there's
no 'bidding pollution' yet...
So it's difficult to me to make out if there's a real interest in a towel
signed by Douglas Adams himself.
As you know in my eyes it's a big white elephant of any DNA collection, much
worthier than a signed book or so.
A towel which was owned&used by him might be cooler. Or f.e. his old Apple
Macintosh. Agree. But a signed towel is terrefic, isn't it ?!?
In 3.5 hours we all will know who is gonna be the happy frood who pimps up
his collection with this *ultimate* towel... (-:

I thought it means a "valuable item which is useless". Am I totally wrong?
Thanks for comment. It's quite difficult to phrase/formulate in English. Not

A white elephant is something you sell at a garage sale for fifty cents.
Generally, you buy such things because you can't believe how funny they
are. Then they decorate your life for a year or two, or more if you use
them as closet decorations that get forgotten. Generally if someone says
"I like it", you give the thing to them. If that doesn't happen you put
them out at community garage sales or something like that. Then the
cycle repeats....

I really used that phrase in a wrong way - meaning it's opposite meaning.
