IS the movie worth seeing? I haven't seen it yet... I wouldn't want to
waste five dollars!
Anyway, I hope everyone is well here. Are they?

Opinions vary.
My own feeling is that the movie is better than the bad reviews, but
closer to Hollywood sci-fi entertainment than to real hitchhiker
standard. I enjoyed the movie a lot, but I can see the point of those
who didn't.
In short, I can say that there is _nothing_ new in the movie of original
hitchhiker quality, the added humour is more slapsticky. But to me, that
worked okay, and set me in the mood to enjoy the really good jokes I
know by heart. Worst minus was when some of the passages had been
butchered by removing a line or two that were vital for the timing of a
joke.
In short: Go see it, and judge for yourself, in my opinion it's as much
worth 5 $ as any other movie.

Well, you missed the great movie wars, and Nikitta has moved with a
boyfriend again, this time to Ireland (or was it Northern Ireland?).
Uhm, we're somewhere in the Deep Thought scene of Fit the Fourth, and
are expecting to finish Primary Phase anywhere within the next
century... Uhm... Chiggy (Dave Adallan) has returned and started being
very active again, and has even for a while provided Liff-word of the
day, but it seems he has returned his book to the library - uhm - and
the website hasn't been updated :-) Oh, and we've had a completely
exceptional amount of postings from Jacoob (that is at least 5).
Can't think of anything more. Oh, yes, MJ Simpson has withdrawn
completely from Douglas Adams society being very angry about people
taking his very bad movie review badly.
Glad to have you back! Stay a while :-)

I liked it. I liked the DNA take on a traditional hollywood love
story, I found the new things interesting (if not fully formed) and
the traditional elements well done.
Also, the soundtrack has Neil Hannon on it, which is always good.
Oh, and I _really_ liked the Book sections. And the Vogons. And the
missles. And Trillian. And the mice. And Slartibartfast. And...
And... And...
It could have been better, but was better than I was expecting.

It was great fun. The book bits were great, the jokes and plot they
added weren't so great but mostly stood up okay. It starts brilliantly.

Some of us don't find analogies about train wrecks funny, or even fitting.
It'd be like saying:
"It was two jumbo jets flying into skyscrapers."
Not a good analogy. At all, ever.

It was a 3 car pile up on the M4 in which seven people were injured (one
seriously), noone died and no kids were involved.
That's possibly closer to the mark.

I guess you've never been at the site of a traffic collision. There's not

Uhm, defend myself? Those weren't my words I defended.
Yes, I've been to a traffic accident, and no, it wasn't much fun.
However, that doesn't mean I am against analogies used for humourous
intent. I have never seen that analogies detract from the seriousness of
what you are making an analogy to.
Thus, using the words 'train wreck', 'disaster', or 'tragedy' (or indeed
'travestry') may seem extreme, but they are just analogies. I don't see
that should be so controversial. You might as well claim that poetic
language should be banned (What's so funny about having stars twinkle in
your eyes? You try to have some hydrogen fusion in your eyes and see how
you like it) or that exagerations are disallowed (no, you haven't said
it a billion times. If you had, and it took you half a second to say it
each time, and we assume you don't stop to eat and sleep it would have
taken you almost 28 years).
In the case of Freakstone's comment ot was humourous. It had the
characteristics of humour: unexpectedness and absurdity. I found it funny.
I'm sorry you don't. It must be tough being so serious all the time, and
not being able to use humour as a vent for serious situations. But I
don't see why the rest of us can't have fun without being told off.
To the rest of you, who can enjoy dark humour, here's a headline from
todays The Onion (this is actually slightly on topic, Douglas Adams
recommended The Onion as one of his more regular websites):
"God Outdoes Terrorists Yet Again"

In its context, yes, of course it's funny.
In this context of comparing not having liked a movie to a train wreck or a
car collision, things which unfortunately happen on a continuous basis and
some of us have witnessed all too often, unlike the far-flung fantasies of
DNA's literature, it's not funny at all. It's whining, and again, it's
unfortunately continuous even though it can be of absolutely no avail
whatsoever. The movie is made. If you didn't like it, tough.
Thank you for your suggestion on what to do with my indignation. You may
take your own indignant response, print it out, roll it into a nice thin
tube and insert it anywhere you think it will fit. Share and enjoy.

Lighten up, people. Didn't Ford himself describe Vogons to Arthur as having
"all the sex appeal of a road accident"? Humour often offends and often
that's what makes it funny. If you go through life never risking offending
anyone then I think you'd miss out on a great deal.

It's not an analogy. It's a figure of speech.

Life is funny. Life and death are funny - often frustrating, miserable or
ridiculous - often all 3 at once. Douglas Adams knew what "ridiculous"
really meant (open to ridicule) and all his comedy writing from school on up
was pointing out how odd and funny life (yes, and the Universe and
everything) is. I miss him.

But this has been discussed over and over again. I think most people
agree that we don't agree whether the movie was good or not.
Also, %afda id not solely a discussion group ;o)

Not only but also.
No-one would seriously argue that this is a place where discussion of the
movie cannot take place. S'gonna happen, that's life.

Wasn't that what I said?

That is not really my point.
The movie's badness/goodness has been discussed over and over. Too
much to many people's taste.
There is not really a point in continuing discussing the same subject
if there are no new views on the topic - which there does not really
seem to be...
Of course the movie is on topic here - but isn't it about time to move
on and let be - at least for a while?

From my RE AS-Level course:
"An analogy is a comparison made to show similarities."
If that wasn't a comparison between a train wreck and the film to show
similarities, what was it?
The figure of speech you used was an analogy. End of story. No more
questions on my use/knowledge of English are needed, thanks.

It was pants, then.
And a train wreck.
