| Getting rights for douglas adams works. [message #120823] |
Mi, 31 August 2005 19:36 |

Hello,
I'm in the US and I'm looking to get rights to quote a line from
Douglas Adams. Does anyone know who I need to write? To be legal. Since
this is for business purposes. I need to do things correctly.
Thank you,
TC

You almost certainly don't need rights just to quote a line anyway, it
falls under fair use.

I thought he said it was for business reasons. An ad slogan or commercial
use wouldn't be the same as "fair use".

I saw that but when I E-mailed him it bounced back saying mail box full.
I was thinking it may be the wrong person or no longer the right person.

Try the telephone number. It /should/ provide the surest, most
intanteous, corroboration as to whether those contact details are
still correct, and applicable.
I'm offline as I write this (and so can't check), but perhaps Ed
Victor Ltd has a web presence / entry at www.yell.com (or should that
be www.yell.co.uk ?).

Ed Victor Ltd doesn't appear to have a web presence as such, they are
listed in the Literary Agents/Agency section of the on-line version of
the Writers and Artists Year Book:
http://www.writersservices.com/agent/uk/Ed_Victor.htm
There's no phone number listed, but pehaps that can be traced (through
BT's eDQ service perhaps), as long as it isn't ex-directory.
Cheers,
Gary

Does it need quotes, then? I wasn't aware of that. It's one of these
'shortcut'-type explanatory things I've picked up from somewhere
without fully grokking the deeper implications.
Vi? Emacs? Something like that, I presume.

No, they were just to enclose the edited version of it ;o)
> Vi? Emacs? Something like that, I presume.
Regexp I think. I don't believe it would work in emacs, although
perhaps in viper-mode.
It is a standard sed command; it may be used in vi too, but then you'd
have to switch to command mode etc. first:
<ESC>:[range]s/instanteous/instantaneous/
Just checking, actually the version without the trailing slash works
fine in vi - but the trailing slash is needed in sed :-)
Eh, I better use my time for something usedul, like eating dinner...

Nope, but it would need the trailing slash delimiter.

Yes, the quotes are actually only needed when the expression contains
escape charactes.
