We have many friends in the USA who have been severely affected by
hurricane Katrina's devastation. Please donate at least five bucks USD
to the Red Cross national disaster relief fund:

https://www.redcross.org/donate/donation-form.asp

If you can, please also arrange to donate a pint of blood.

Your Trekkie pal,
Laura

If you don't like the Redcross here is a link to the Salvation Army. The
ministers of the Salvation Army work for next to nothing and are tireless in
providing aid where needed the most. The SA has no high profile CEO or big
name board of directors with big salaries. The money goes to the victims and
they never ask for it to be paid back unlike the Redcross.

http://www.salvationarmyusa.org/USNSAHome.htm

They will also take donations of Blood Wine, KahPlah

And if you are Dutch and do not have an American credit card (or something
like that) you can also donate through the Red Cross in The Netherlands.

"Giro 19800 ten name van het Nederlandse Rode Kruis in Den Haag."
The Dutch Red Cross will then transfer it to the American one.

Thank you, Wouter. I've been watching the reports on TV and I feel so
frustrated and helpless. I know many of us wish we could be more
directly helpful to those pitiful, trapped people.

I saw those images and flashed back to the other disasters in recent years,
like the tsunami last Christmas. I felt I had to do something.
There is no official big donation activity over here (no official request
was made by the US Red Cross), but last night I saw a behind the news piece
on NOVA (something of a combination of 'Insight' and 'Larry King Live' on
CNN), and they said that this option was available for those Dutch that
wanted to donate something. I wanted to do so, so I was glad I heard that.
Now I'm passing it on.

Ditto! We helped my church deliver some donations to people --200 arrived
earlier today, and 1800 more are expected in the next few days--who are
staying nearby, and the people (who were dazed looking and appeared
to have been to hell and back :*( were extremely grateful for all the
donations
and just knowing that people care about them! So help in any way you can!
It will be greatly appreciated. :*)

Is there anything specific you would suggest? The more detailed the
instructions, the better.

I am one of many who want to feel like we are contributing to relief
efforts in a direct and immediate way. Those folks have already waited
too long.

To put all of this on-topic:

The Trek philosophy is that we ARE "our brother's keeper". Star Trek
postulated a future where it is a matter of course for people to take
care of each other, through thick and thin.

One of the best ways that was suggested earlier on TV was for those in
the southland (or within driving range, really depends on one's
dedication.) If you have a truck or a cargo van, they want you to
load up with as much water and non-perishible food as possible, and
drop it at the edge of the city. They apparently do not want
civilians to try to enter the city themselves, rather, they'd prefer
the supplies only.

If you live outside the area, contact your local service organizations to
see what they are collecting for delivery. Often local news stations web
sites will have links to these groups. At the preschool where I work we are
collecting for three seperate groups, one is collecting non-perishable food,
one personal care items, and one baby needs. We've had three boxes out
(about 2x2x2) and in three days all are almost filled.

Check with local Red Cross, Salvation Army, churches, etc and see if
they need volunteers to sort items that are received, offer to deliver
them to
specific places (hotels, motels, homes, shelters, whatever), gas prices are
going up and they'll need help defraying those costs, some people
are needed to help at the shelters with cooking, cleaning, etc.

And don't forget about the animals--a lot of people made it out with
cats, dogs, birds, etc. and they'll be needing food and pet supplies
as well. Check with your local SPCA, Petco or Petsmart and see if they
have any programs in place that might need volunteers.

Go door to door in your neighborhood and ask for donations of
pillows, twin sheets, pillow cases, any and all baby items, go to
Costco or Sam's once you find a need and try to fill it as much as
your pocket will let you--there's a ton of ways in every community
that you can help out...if you want to donate money specifically to
the Hurrican victims, be sure to mark that on your check, because
otherwise the money might be used (albeit for good) elsewhere...

Someone at my church today gave the quote that about 60 cents
goes to the actual victims, whereas over 90 cents donated to SA
goes to the victims, so that might be something to think about when
you donate money.

Do help in any way you can, financially or physically. You will really
feel so good about helping out, and I'm sure your karma will appreciate
it too! :-)

Which is why the Red Cross set out to steal the 911 funds. They weren't
getting a cut of it, so they tried to redirect it into areas they'd be able
to embezzle from.
