Saw this on another group. Thought I'd cross-post it here for those of you
who may be interested.
LOS ANGELES (August 26) - Sean Astin, who starred in the "Lord of the Rings"
trilogy, is joining the cast of Fox's real-time drama "24," which will again
kick off its season with four episodes screening on two consecutive nights.
Astin will portray a new addition to the Counter Terrorist Unit in the drama
series, which stars Kiefer Sutherland as agent Jack Bauer.
The fifth season will premiere with two episodes from 8-10 p.m. Jan. 8,
followed by two from 8-10 p.m. Jan. 9 (the second episode Jan. 9 will be the
show's 100th). On Jan. 16, the fifth hour of "24" will air in the show's
regular 9 p.m. Monday slot.
The scheduling strategy is designed to let viewers watch an entire season on
a weekly basis without repeats or pre-emptions.
Season 5 will pick up 18 months after the fourth season ended, with Jack
presumably dead but actually living a new life with Diane (Connie Britton)
and her son Derek (Brady Corbet). Jean Smart ("Frasier") is set to play
first lady Martha Logan.
Astin is shooting Columbia Pictures' feature film "Click" opposite Adam
Sandler and Kate Beckinsale and has wrapped the upcoming Lions Gate film
"Borderland."

Well, technically a single physical copy appears in a suitably
well-designed newsreader subscribed to both newsgroups, I'd have
thought. You could technically have different newsreaders or accounts,
with only one newsreader or account subscribed to each newsgroup. You'd
then still end up with two copies of the post, one from each newsgroup.
Actually, two physical copies appear in my newsreader (or appears to),
and the newsreader just marks one as read. Though maybe it really is
only one copy that has these pointers you are talking about.
Or does all this happen at the news server end of things?

So if you reply, and add in a different newsgroup, like I've done for
AFT, is that cross-posting or re-posting or both? :-)

Samwise Gamgee in 24?
Bloody hell, wouldn't of thought he would need the money!
I can't imagine sam in a swat team or in a firefight, it sounds utterly
weird.

How about Frodo as a football (soccer) hooligan? :-)
It's true! Elijah Wood's latest film is one where he is an innocent US
kid drawn into the world of football hooliganism! (Called 'Hooligans' in
the US and 'Green Street' in the UK). [Hey, checking that on IMDb, and I
hadn't realised that Elijah Wood appeared in 'Sin City'!]
Though to be fair, Elijah Wood is a good enough actor not to get
typecast. Apparantly some US audiences had difficulty getting an image
out of their minds of Sam Gamgee actor Sean Astin as this part he played
in the film 'Rudy' (something about US football). Ditto Hugo Weaving for
'The Matrix' and the LotR films.

_Technically_ a single physical copy appears in a suitably well-designed
news _server_ containing both groups. What happens in your own computer is
of little interest to the server people - but when they're carrying 10,000
newsgroups, they'd prefer not to see any redundancy.

Please! It's Outlook Express - you surely don't expect they made any
attempt at efficiency? :-)

Mostly. I'm not entirely sure how my newsreader does it (KNode on linux) -
I don't think it can be simply a matter of having a single copy of the
message - but it _is_ capable of knowing that a message has already been
read in another newsgroup and not showing it as new & unread in any
subsequent group.

Definitely cross-posting. It's not re-posting, though, because you're still
continuing a conversation.

His part in 'Sin City' as a mute serial murderer-vivisectionist wasn't type
casting a bit :)

not to mention Wood playing that despicable character in "Eternal Sunshine
of The Sunless Mind". He seems to have made a concerted effort to play
characters as far away from Frodo as possible.
And I will say this about Sean Astin -- I've only recently seen "Rudy" and
enjoyed it quite a bit. Between that, the LotR movies and "50 First Dates"
it's proving to be fun to catch films he's in.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.

Have you seen 'The Goonies' yet? :-)

THAT was a wonderful movie. And it made me admire Wood, because he can
play such different roles.

I wasn't sure if I admired him until I saw him in the coming of age movie
"The War" (1994). It's not the greatest movie in the world, but he was
very, very good - much younger, obviously, but asked to do a great deal more
than in Eternal Sunshine. Based on what I see there, I think he could have
truly excelled in LOTR if he had been differently directed. As it is, we
only see flashes of what he is capable of. (And he was too young for the
part anyway.)

Yes, and yes. Well, I quite liked him in the first movie and I thought
he was okay in the second. But I hated him in the third which was a
pity, because it was the most important one (for me, at least).

I think actors like Elijah Wood are typecasted the most because they just
look so young. So I think Green Street Hooligans was an interesting movie
for him to take. To do something different.
