Guys, we're looking at the second most powerful hurricane to ever make
landfall on the mainland US, and one of the most powerful to make
landfall ever (in the meteorological record). Hundreds of thousands
are already displaced; millions may be homeless by this time tommorrow.
Beyond this, almost half the deaths caused by the last storm of this
magnitude to hit the mainland US were caused by massive rain the better
part of a thousand miles inland three days after landfall. All this,
and a major tornado outbreak is expected on the fringe (and several
have already been tracked as I post this). To make matters even worse
still, it's also among the largest of storms in raw breadth of
projected damage path. Worst case, we're looking at a death toll
comparable to the 2004 tsunami. Best case? Well, when it crossed
Florida it killed 7 and it was only a category 1 then - it's category 5
now. I suppose best case means we'll only see a few dozen killed and
less than a hundred thousand rendered homeless.
What I'm saying is, it's bad. It's really bad. There's not much any
of us can do, but can we at least express our well wishes to those who
are caught in this disaster?

*Nods* I was just listening to the radio and heard about it an immediately
thought if _Isaac's Storm_. It's a book about the worst storm and what
happened to Galveston, Texas. *Deletes some stuff that may be untrue, it
being so long since he listened to the book. I.E. Galveston being his twice
by worst storm ever.*
More info on the book and the storm of 1900:
http://www.randomhouse.com/features/isaacsstorm/
It is interesting to note that the main "character" of the book, Isaac
Cline, died in that storm.
Back to current events, I can't say I have much pity for the people staying
behind. New Orleans is *below sea level,* why on earth do people think
*anything* will be left. My money is on that the Mississippi delta will be
mostly washed away, what will be left (and is currently dry) will be
underwater. Also, most of the debre will end up miles inland (about 10) or
in giant piles in the Gulf.
*Looks at some weather satellite images*
Wow, that sucker's even hitting Galveston. Well, with some wind and
rain...maybe just clouds...can't tell.

*Finds some maps*
Whoa, *three* category 4's in 32 years. 1900, 1915, and 1932. All hit
Galveston island (the 1932 one hitting more of the county the other two
passing through Brazoria. The county next door (west)). Another
storm in 1949 came nearby, hitting just a ways north, closer to Houston (~10
mi) heading NNE. The one in '32 paralleled the 45 highway as it went
through Galveston (~4 mi away).
*Messes around looking for Cat.5's* Hmm...New Orleans got a Cat.5 in 1947.
Dead on, it headed WNW through all those lakes.
Well, if anyone wants to take a look, here's the viewer:

In point of fact, it's thought it takes about 72 hours to evacuate the
New Orleans area once the mandatory evacuation order is give; they had
less then 24. The gas stations were emptied Saturday by many leaving
early as usually happens with a storm - anybody with less than half of
a tank won't be able to make the trip out safely thanks to the driving
conditions. The airports closed by mid-day Sunday, and there are no
rental vehicles remaining available. Then, there are those who have no
means to safely leave; the hospitals were exempted from the evacuation
order specifically for this reason. The hotels were exempted
specifically because so many tourists were trapped with no means of
acquiring outgoing transport. And of course the staff is required to
manage these places.
There are many shelters set up - I believe they announced about 12
hours ago they had close to 25k people there. The strategy is to get
high above ground level to avoid the storm surge, but not high enough
to be affected by the wind.
The true disaster will be for those who stupidly never sought shelter,
and for those who are expected to lose their homes and livelihoods.

As I pen this New Orleans is being hit by a cat 4 hurricane. Many are
sheltered in the Superdome and most have fled to other states. Even Houston
is booked at the motels/hotels. This storm will effect gas prices for
months due to the refinery capacity of New Orleans. My prayers do go to
those still in the city.

The latest on the hurricane is it's down to a cat 1 now. But made landfall as a
cat 4. Some streets are flooded with up to 10 ft deep water and the Superdome,
which many residents were using as a shelter has holes in the roof. All flights
in and out of the area are cancelled for the next two days and there is no cell
phone service either. In addition power is out to most everyone hit by this
storm.
Here is a short update on the storms projected path and affected areas.
From http://www.weather.com/newscenter/tropical/?from=wxcenter_ne ws :
"In addition to the strong winds, heavy rainfall and isolated tornadoes are
possible along and to the east of Katrina's path through Tuesday. The biggest
threat for tornadoes through Tuesday morning extends from the central and
eastern Gulf coast northward into southern Tennessee. Some cities that could be
impacted are Mobile, Montgomery, Birmingham, Atlanta and Chattanooga. Tuesday
the main threat extends from northeastern Alabama and northern Georgia north to
western Pennsylvania. Cities that could be threatened Tuesday include Knoxville,
Roanoke, Chicinnati, Lexington, Charleston, W. Va., and Pittsburgh. "
You can get the latest info on this storm by clicking the above link. Prayers
and hopes to those who are being, have been, and will be affected by this storm.

Ah, so it's less choice than I thought
From what I'd heard on the radio is that people *chose* to stay.

Oh goodness no! The SuperDome and other shelters gave first priority
to those who were too infirm and otherwise incapable of leaving. True,
plenty chose to try to ride it out, but a lot of people simply couldn't
get through the traffic that literally gridlocked I-10 for most of
Sunday.
Now, I'm going to make certain I've got my stuff water-proofed.
Central Ky is due to be hit mid-day tommorrow, and it's still expected
to be a fairly strong tropical depression then, and I don't wanna see
more of my stuff lost in another roof leak.

Word about the SuperDome was scary. I was watching the news as their
report gave live reporting of the roof of the Dome starting to fail.
Man I can't imagine what it would've been like if that roof had failed
altogether!

She's just now reached Kentucky and is tossing around sustained winds
of 50mph. It's going to be a really good day to be working inside (if

The storm is venting her fury in the Northeastern United States.
Search and rescue crews in the affected areas are still hoping to find
survivors. At last news at least 80% of New Orleans is under water. The
Governor of Louisiana has ordered the complete evacuation of New Orleans.
The storm itself is gone, but her impact will be felt for much time to come.
While there are times that I wish that we had water dragons to control the
storm surges and wind dragons to beat off the storm, in the "mundane world"
there is far too little that we can do to prevent such catastrophes.
....but maybe we still can help. In addition to my prayers, I'm going to
contact the local Red Cross and see what kind of supplies I can donate from
my own "hoard" to send to these people. If I can, I will also donate blood.
Also, I would also advise all dragons who wish to help that there are many
greedy humans that would scam us of our generousity. I found one website
that gives some great tips on how to judge between the true and the false.
http://www.networkforgood.org/donate/donatesafetytips.aspx
There are other websites that would give similar information, but I can't
seem to recall them right now.

This email my mom got kind of belongs in this thread. BTW, Snopes.com
indicates this as true. Rather funny, although very serious.
Entitled:
"Vacation is Over...an open letter from Michael Moore to George W. Bush"
Friday, September 2nd, 2005
Dear Mr. Bush:
Any idea where all our helicopters are? It's Day 5 of Hurricane Katrina and
thousands remain stranded in New Orleans and need to be airlifted. Where on
earth could you have misplaced all our military choppers? Do you need help
finding them? I once lost my car in a Sears parking lot. Man, was that a
drag.
Also, any idea where all our national guard soldiers are? We could really
use them right now for the type of thing they signed up to do like helping
with national disasters. How come they weren't there to begin with?
Last Thursday I was in south Florida and sat outside while the eye of
Hurricane Katrina passed over my head. It was only a Category 1 then but it
was pretty nasty. Eleven people died and, as of today, there were still
homes without power. That night the weatherman said this storm was on its
way to New Orleans. That was Thursday! Did anybody tell you? I know you
didn't want to interrupt your vacation and I know how you don't like to get
bad news. Plus, you had fundraisers to go to and mothers of dead soldiers to
ignore and smear. You sure showed her!
I especially like how, the day after the hurricane, instead of flying to
Louisiana, you flew to San Diego to party with your business peeps. Don't
let people criticize you for this -- after all, the hurricane was over and
what the heck could you do, put your finger in the dike?
And don't listen to those who, in the coming days, will reveal how you
specifically reduced the Army Corps of Engineers' budget for New Orleans
this summer for the third year in a row. You just tell them that even if you
hadn't cut the money to fix those levees, there weren't going to be any Army
engineers to fix them anyway because you had a much more important
construction job for them -- BUILDING DEMOCRACY IN IRAQ!
On Day 3, when you finally left your vacation home, I have to say I was
moved by how you had your Air Force One pilot descend from the clouds as you
flew over New Orleans so you could catch a quick look of the disaster. Hey,
I know you couldn't stop and grab a bullhorn and stand on some rubble and
act like a commander in chief. Been there done that.
There will be those who will try to politicize this tragedy and try to use
it against you. Just have your people keep pointing that out. Respond to
nothing. Even those pesky scientists who predicted this would happen because
the water in the Gulf of Mexico is getting hotter and hotter making a storm
like this inevitable. Ignore them and all their global warming Chicken
Littles. There is nothing unusual about a hurricane that was so wide it
would be like having one F-4 tornado that stretched from New York to
Cleveland.
No, Mr. Bush, you just stay the course. It's not your fault that 30 percent
of New Orleans lives in poverty or that tens of thousands had no
transportation to get out of town. C'mon, they're black! I mean, it's not
like this happened to Kennebunkport. Can you imagine leaving white people on
their roofs for five days? Don't make me laugh! Race has nothing -- NOTHING
-- to do with this!
You hang in there, Mr. Bush. Just try to find a few of our Army helicopters
and send them there. Pretend the people of New Orleans and the Gulf Coast
are near Tikrit.
Yours,
Michael Moore

P.S. That annoying mother, Cindy Sheehan, is no longer at your ranch. She
and dozens of other relatives of the Iraqi War dead are now driving across
the country, stopping in many cities along the way. Maybe you can catch up
with them before they get to DC on September 21st.

Unfortunately, Moore once again uses as much hyperbole as he does
rational argument. I'm broadly in sympathy with his aims, but his
methods leave a bit to be desired. He's undermining his own argument
with such pronouncements, here.
I'm also not sure now is quite the time. At least wait until everyone
is safe before opening fire...

Heh - any time I see that guy I look for overstatement and
misinformation. Like you I agree with the *stated* purpose, but I
disagree completly with his methods. Heck, nine tenths of the far left
can't stand him either; that's gotta count for something, when you're
so offbeat your own claimed kind can't stand you.

Guess I'm sorry for posting it then. I've never heard of Moore before
(names in the news/politics/sports/music generally have no meaning to me),
and I figured it was worth passing on if my mother thought it was.

Don't be. It's how we learn. And you might be inclined to pass this
word along to your mother as a way of helping her avoid publicly
humiliating herself by espousing his stuff.

I'd give Rice some credit here. It is NOT because they are black. If they
were poor white they'd be treated just as badly. And are, I suspect.

*nod* He's damaging the cause, as I said. There are enough
legitimate things to criticise Bush for, one hardly needs to rely on
stuff that's unproveable.
> Guess I'm sorry for posting it then.
No need to be. It's always interesting to find out what Michael
Moore has to say. Sometimes, he raises very good points -- it's just
he's developed something of a reputation for pushing his agenda to
the detriment of the facts.
> I've never heard of Moore before (names in the
> news/politics/sports/music generally have no meaning to me),
He's an extreme liberal film-maker from Flint, Michigan, with a very
strong anti-Republican -- and specifically anti-Bush -- bias. He
wrote and directed the 'documentaries' Bowling for Columbine and
Fahrenheit 9/11, and has written best-selling books Stupid White Men
and Dude, Where's My Country?
> and I figured it was worth passing on if my mother thought it was.
Moore's material is pretty entertaining, provided one remembers that
it's a long way from objective journalism. He doesn't hide the fact
he has an agenda, but I feel his approach is too scattershot to be
effective. If he concentrated on proveable issues rather than
conspiracy theory, he'd be a bit more credible.
TV Nation, a television show focusing on the oddities of the USA that
aired here in Britain before he became famous/infamous, is still my
favourite piece of his work.
