I don't see a shoe in ROTJ [message #118665] Sa, 27 August 2005 13:13
Felicity
I found a video store that has the original original edition of ROTJ
and I rented it and went through the space battle scenes in slow motion
looking for the shoe that I've been hearing about for years. I couldn't
find it. A Google search on the topic only shows that everyone else has
heard of it, but nobody can prove it. Does anyone have a screenshot, or
some kind of proof that it exists?

What shoe have you been hearing about?

There's lots of things put into scenes by the special effects and CGI
teams as in-jokes, but these things are very small and only appear
briefly, so you'll only see them in a few frames. Some can't even be
seen on-screen at all (eg. one of the Millennium Falcon model had a
tiny Star Wars movie poster in the cockpit).

Asteroid scenes are a favourite since they have lots of objects moving
around. Asteroid scens in the various Star Wars movies have had various
strange things placed in them: shoes, potatoes, the big CGI tick that
Anakin rides in Episode II, etc.

To find them you'll need to know the exact frames and position - your
chances of simply spotting them are very low.

It wasn't the Falcon that had the starwars poster; it was (supposedly) (one
of) the star destroyers.

That's what I thought, but wasn't sure enough to mention it.

I don't know about a Star Destroyer, but I did get it wrong above. It
wasn't the Falcon that I was remembering reading about, it was the
model of Leia's Blockade Runner. Here's the quote from the book talking
about the making of the original "Star Wars" movie ...

In what would become a tradition of moviemaking in-jokes
by Lucasfilm folks, a tiny Star Wars poster and a Playboy
centrefold were hung on the cockpit wall of the model
ships, out of camera eye.

{ Photo through cockpit window of the Blockade Runner }
{ showing the tiny Star Wars poster and centerfold. }

The potato is in TESB (Asteroid scene) and the sneaker is in ROTJ (DS2
battle) - I've seen neither.

As mentioned earlier in the thread, there's a tiny SW poster but it's not in
the Falcon or a Star Destroyer (since their windows are tiny tiny TINY
holes!) but it IS in the Tantive IV (Rebel Blockade Runner) but since
there's no head-on shot of the front of the ship in ANH it is not visible in
the film, but there are plenty of online pictures of it.

Other notable Easter Eggs:

- The Tick creature from Naboo is in the Asteroid Ring around Geonosis in
AOTC (I haven't found it, probably too small like the potato & sneaker)

- X-wing being chased by 2 TIE Fighters on Coruscant in AOTC - confirmed. (I
have a 65" HDTV and can clearly see them, they are during the Zam chase,
just after Zam starts going straight down through traffic and Anakin/Obi-Wan
follow suit, there's a brief shot where we're looking straight down and
there's a "trench" to the far left bottom of the screen, the X-wing and TIEs
are in this trench going from the bottom of the screen upwards. It lasts a
few frames so is easy to see and I would imagine they are only visible in
the Widescreen version of the film - and on a large TV)

- 2 Millennium Falcons (cargo ship types, not the actual Falcons, but that's
irrelevant) on Naboo in AOTC - confirmed. (As Anakin & Padme arrive on Naboo
on the "refuge" transport ship, as the ship comes to the landing platform,
they become visible as the camera shifts to the left, one clearly the other
partially for a split second. This again is only visible on the Widescreen
version of the film.)

- The ACTUAL Millennium Falcon on Coruscant in ROTS - confirmed. (It is
visible leaving the Senate landing platform as Anakin et al arrive just
after the crash landing in the beginning of the film. I say "actual" because
GL himself said it was the Falcon.)

Unless they age differently than everybody else...it would have to neither
of them, seeing as how ROTS takes place nearly 20 years before ANH.

In the ANH special edition, you can see Dash Rendar's ship, the "Outrider"
flying over Mos Eisley.

An R2-D2 model was built into the mothership in Close Encounters Of The
Third Kind.

And on a related note, in the 2003 Battlestar Galactica miniseries, you can
see "Serenity," from Joss Whedon's "Firefly" and the upcoming "Serenity"
movie, landing on Caprica in an early scene.

In "Gremlins," when the gremlins are gathered in the movie theater, you can
just barely see Mickey Mouse, way at the back.

Any other cool in-jokes you can think of?

That would suggest Lando was flying it. Unless he was supposed to be only
around 30 in TESB. I would guess Lando was around 20 during ROTS.

Nope. Lando won the Falcon in a card game and only owned it for a short
time before losing it to Han. Neither would be flying the Falcon during
the time of Episode III.

The droids R2-D2 and C-3PO carved on the wall in one of the Indianna
Jones movies, plus of course "Club Obi-Wan".

They're called "Easter Eggs" (because people have to hunt for the
surprise). Try these websites for LOTS more Easter Eggs in movies,

What's a short time? A year? 5 years? 10? I'm not saying it WAS Lando, but
there is no evidence to say it was NOT him either.

That would be Raiders of the Lost Ark. There is a picture of the

It's not "canon", so no doubt some fools will whine on about it, but
for the rest of us there IS evidence.

According to the timeline in the front of most of the paperback novels,
the Lando Calrissian Trilogy takes place just 5 to 2 years before ANH,
and he acquired the Falcon just before those books start.

Also, according to the great research work in Star Wars Timeline Gold
at http://www.starwarsfanworks.com/timeline/ :

31 years before ANH
Lando Calrissian is born.
(conjecture based The Hutt Gambit)

That would make him only about 12 at the time of Episode III.

Plus these two:

5 years before ANH
Lando Calrissian acquires the Millennium Falcon in a
sabacc game and begins to use it on adventures to
boost his reputation.
(conjecture based on The Hutt Gambit and The Lando
Calrissian Adventures)

3 years before ANH
In the [sabacc] tournament, Han and Lando are the
last two competitors and in what could be the most
important win in Hanšs career, Han wins the
Millennium Falcon from Lando in a poorly-worded bet.

All of these say that Lando only owned the Falcon for about two years
and couldn't possibly own the Falcon in Episode III ... although it may
or may not still be possible that 12 year old Lando was on the ship in
Episode III for some reason (doubtful though and there's no proof at
all either way).

:-)

Note:
Those quotes are fomr Star Wars Timeline Gold version 35. I haven't yet
downloaded the new version 37, so those things MIGHT have moved, but I
wouldn't think so.

Unless something more solid comes around, I'm around 5 to 7 years off on
Lando's age in TESB. I can roll with your assessment though. Sounds good to
me...well until some other novel contradicts everyone and every novel. But
who am I kiddin? That would nnneeeevvvveeerrrr happen in the ST universe.

It's not really my assessment - it thanks to all the hard work by the
person / people at Timeline Gold. :-)

With those two fools Beavis & Butthead in charge of Star Trek, anything
is possible over there. ;-)

The one that appears in the original edition of ROTJ in a space battle
scene.

Can you confirm/prove that, ideally with a screen shot?

Has *anyone* actually seen the shoe first-hand, or is it an urban
legend?

The Millennium Falcon in BLADE RUNNER - confirmed. (It's on top of Police HQ
as Deckard is being flown there by Edward James Olmos, as the Spinner flies
in for the final landing, it's on top of the roof, on the right side of the
screen, and it's NOT to scale with everything around it, it's much
smaller...but it is the Falcon)

The Millennium Falcon in the Borg attack on Earth in STAR TREK: FIRST
CONTACT - confirmed. (It's visible in about 3-4 frames just after the
Enterprise-E flies off the right side of the screen after saving the Defiant
from the Borg tractor beam, it flies out from behind the Borg cube towards
the right bottom of the screen)

There will be a picture and description somewhere on the Internet. I
think the giant "tick" being used as an asteroid in Episode II was
actually in one of the documentaries somewhere.

Try somewhere like http://www.eeggs.com or the other places I listed
before.

Who knows. Ewoks generally go barefoot, and Jabba the Hutt has no feet.
What shoe he's talking about, I have no idea. Poop, pee, poop, poop,
poop-dee-doop-a-loop, poop poop poop-dee-doop.

I did search, but so far no luck.

eeggs.com seems to only have comments left by people who have heard of
the shoe, but not seen it, and no screenshots or other
confirmation/proof...I'll try the other sites you listed earlier.

that's it, the Tantive IV, not the Super Star Destroyer.

One of the star destroyers, near the climax of the film, apparently
looks like a shoe, therefore...

This is what I had explained to my person by someone who knew all about
this urban legend.
