Not really, the being drunk joke is much better in English.
While Jacob's attempt does keep the double meaning, it fails because the
first alternative is not really much more pleasant than the second.
Translation goes like this:
It's as unpleasant as being [[tied up]]
What do you mean?
You ask a beer!
(Where the word for [[tied up]] has a double meaning where it could also
be "emptied", particularly used about drinking a beer in one go.)
What we need is a good common word for something (more or less) pleasant
(like 'drunk') which also means something genuinely unpleasant and
unexpected at the same time (like 'drunk').

Oh, ah. Tied up, of course. Well, it's not the first meaning that
springs to mind in the sentence "It's as unpleasant as being tied up",
is it?
Mayube it would work if it was made to be "It's as unpleasant as being
(tied up/emptied) by a lady"... hmmm...
I guess that sort of works. But it's not quite the same.
Of course you could do the joke as
"It's unpleasantly like being tied up"
"Well, I like being tied up, really"
"You wouldn't if you were a beer"
But that's just not really Arthur's style...

Is a completely, absolutely faithful translation of
"It's unpleasantly like being drunk."

You're right, I didn't, and it was more of a mental image of someone
trying to grab a glas of water with their ass, or someone making an ass
of himself, to get a glas of water, or someone being outraged at the
price someone wants to a glas of water, going "You ass! For a glas of
water?!" not to mention that it could be someone trying to trade ass for
a glas of water "You! Ass for a glas of water?" - the last taking place
somewhere with a dire lack of water.
All of those thoughts and mental images, but not really a joke.
BTW: I've now sorted out the things about moving and will take a plane to
Ireland Thursday. The shipping compagny will come for the stuff we're
shipping Wednesday; this includes my computer, which I'll then have to
unpluck and pack tomorrow night.

Yeah. I'm in Cork now. It's a very nice place, though I'm worried about
there being so many shoe shops around. Does anyone know what density of
shoe shops is needed to reach the shoe event horizon? It wouldn't be
safe to stay longer than till just before we get there.
I'm currently reading The Orcs omnibus, by Stan Nicholls. I bought it
here, and I really like it. Has anyone else read it?

I have never heard of any written record. I guess the shoe event
horizon never hit Earth.
I think we'll have to be careful here and watch out for it - we might
be able to stop it in time or at least flee in time.
