Who here likes D&D?
I've been chatting with a fellow on the WotC boards about enhancing
dragons in the current incarnation of the game, and here's the link:
http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?t=478652
I'm scott644 there.
Anyways, comments and involvement would be great - we're looking
forward to seeing how folks with a vested interest like it!

Cool! I'd mentioned I was in contact with the international dragon
community, and the original poster was extrememly interested in our
opinions! I know mine is positive, but I worked on it so I'm biased.
^_^ So it's good to hear from you.

Sorry, archived the post, haven't had time to peruse the thread on the
board, nor to reply. But here's my small amount of change:
I play dragons as often as I can, and I play them well. I'm not just
saying this, I've been complimented on my playing ability with a
hatchling in RIFTS. I had exactly the right kind of aloofness,
curiosity, playfulness, etc, etc, that a hatchling would have, plus I
got into some interesting moments.
As for dragons in D&D, there are 2 ways of doing things, from what I
understand. One is to use dragon age categories as just that: age
categories. At a certain age, you grow up, out, and more powerful.
This works fine if everyone's a dragon, since you can all "hibernate" at
the same time to allow yourself to grow. This doesn't work all that
well with other races, since they'd be dead or retired when you reach
the next category.
The other is to treat age categories as levels. Not 1 age category to 1
level, but say 1 age category for every 5 levels or so. I believe the
Draconomicon has rules for both methods, but I'm too lazy to go look it
up (it's in a whole other room!!) so perhaps I'll do that in the future
and get back to you.
Another option is the half-dragon template in the MM and the Dragon
Deciple prestige class in Tome and Blood. Granted they're not full
dragons, but they are draconic.
Yet another option, if you want to pick up the book, is Monte Cook's
Arcana Evolved. It's got two draconic races, the Dracha, who were made
by dragons in their image so they're strong and can fly (if you take
levels in the Dracha "class"); and the Mojh, who were humans that tried
to become dragons through magic, and have good magic abilities.
And there are prolly more ideas out there, either in other books, or in
other people's minds. All in all, what's needed is game balance. You
can't have a dragon go around with 1st level characters and expect
either the dragon to be challenged while not killing toe other PCs or to
mildly challenge the other PCs and keep the dragon interested.
I would say that dragons have to be in a higher level campaign (the
earliest one can be a PC according to one set of rules in the
Draconomicon is level 12 I believe), or perhaps as a periodic character
if you have someone who can't attend all the time. They only get XP for
the sessions they're there for, so even starting at level 1, a dragon
"sponsor" who only happens to appear once a month (playing time) would
start out very powerful, but eventually would begin to be less powerful
than the other PCs as time goes on.
But I'm rambling, as it's 0210, and I have to be up in less than 8 hours
and thus should be pretending to sleep. If I come up with any other
ideas, I'll be sure to let you know.

Actually, the way D&D currently runs, every HD is a level, adding your
character's Level Adjustment to find your total ECL. It's best running
them now as the 1 for 1 that way, adjusting for the LA. The game
allows for having more HD than a dragon's age category allows, by
simply advancing them an effective category every 3 HD. There are two
schools of thought for running them now; strictly by racial level and
age categories ignored, or requiring the first three levels after the
age marker be racial levels so they'll qualify for the next age
category when it comes. Either way, dragons can now take class levels
as well; it's really cool. You should post up in that thread - keeping
my points in mind. With your experience, you could give ideas as to
what we as DM's could expect with PC and NPC characters playing dragons.
Oh, and btw, with the Level Adjustment system, you don't have to
restrict it to all are dragons/none are dragons any more. ^_^

You know how I'd create dragons? I'd create opalescent (or gemstone
like, if that's the correct word for it) dragons, three of which would
be true neutral, one of which would be lawful evil, and one of which
would be chaotic good. Either that or create three opalescent dragons,
one more metallic, and one more chromatic. What do you think? Of
course, these would be additions to, not replacements for, the current
dragon set.

Perhaps I will, one day when I get off work early enough to think.....

I know that, I was refering to the age category idea, where most of
their lives will be spend doing other things, so they can come back at a
higher age category.
Also, an idea that a friend of mine came up with (since my hatchling was
way too underpowered) was to send me through a "time warp" so I cam back
aged a few hundred years. Not the best way, or a particularly
explicable way for most DMs, but still an idea.

2nd Edition has Gem Dragons, they're basically the Neutral faction, with
Chromatic being the Evil faction and Metallic being the Good faction.
The gem dragons from 2nd Ed are the Amethyst dragon (TN), Crystal dragon
(CN), Emerald dragon (LN), Sapphire dragon (LN), and Topaz dragon (CN).

Metallic dragons:
Brass and Copper - chaotic good
Bronze, Silver and Gold - lawful good
Chromatic dragons:
Blue and Green - lawful evil
White, Black and Red - chaotic evil
Gem dragons:
Amethyst (purple) - neutral
Crystal (clear) and Topaz (yellowish) - chaotic neutral
Emerld (green) and Sapphire (blue) - lawful neutral
Topaz is closest thing to what is asked. There are other "true"
dragons in the D&D world, but they're the planar dragons and not bound
by colors.

I was thinking of adding a platinum, yellow, and ruby dragon to the
mix. I was gonna go with heliodor, but then I realized I could just
make platinum and yellow interbreedable, turning them into a true
neutral cerrusite dragon. Platinum would be neutral good. Yellow would
be neutral evil. Ruby would be true neutral. Or maybe instead of ruby,
carnelian. Which would be orange and red, or red with orange.

Well, platinum is one of the dragon gods actually. Yellow isn't in 3.5
(but that's no reason to exclude it) - don't think I've ever even heard
of rudy. Combining all three though... hmm... a shiny orange dragon?
A chromium dragon?

Well, is there an iron dragon?
Better yet, just have the yellow dragon represent sulfur and have a
strontium dragon, which is naturally silver but turns yelow in air.
Then cerrusite would be a mixture of the two. The thing is, I don't
know if I should add another poisonous dragon, and I don't know if
strontium loses its metallic luster when it turns yellow. I suppose I
could just use yellow and iron, and use a yellowish gray, beige, to
represent cerrusite.

Better yet, if iron isn't taken, it would be yellow(sulfur),
iron(gray), and pyrite/fool's-gold.
