Has anyone else seen this? Clive Owen (the actor I originally wanted to play
007) can't even send the role up decently.

I saw Owen in 'A Day in the Death of Joe Egg' on stage several years
ago, and I hate to say it, but... (wince) ...the guy isn't much of an
actor. He's a Johnny-One-Note, and the one thing he does really well
is to smoulder. Now, if there's only one thing you can do as an actor,
then being enigmatic and suggesting that you have hidden depths is a
great trick to have up your sleeve, and Owen does that very well.
Problem is, once you ask him to do anything more than that, he's
frankly useless.
In a nutshell, he's the British Keanu Reeves.
IMHO, of course.

Craig has received a lot of criticism, but I don't think anyone could deny
he is a cracking actor.

'Our Friends in the North'. End of argument about his acting ability
AFAIC. He ages thirty years, changes from insecure post-teen to
swaggering gangster's henchman to schizophrenic and alcoholoic street
bum without a single false note being struck along the way, and all the
time in a faultless Geordie accent totally removed from his usual RP
speech. One of the great British screen performances of the '90s.

It was a bit odd and oddly paced at times, but it's hard to be too critical
of a movie when you're sitting there thinking "this is crap", only to be
interrupted to laugh outloud.
further, I appreciate the NEW PP movie even more since I then got the 1963
PP from Netflix. Wow. Filmmaking has come a long way, and I HATED the
original.

Sadly, I experienced only the former. The latter didn't even
threaten to make its presence felt. Not even a chuckle.
Liked the alternate credits though. Not funny, but clever.

I've always enjoyed that movie. Just watched it again a few weeks ago. I
rather enjoy the convoluted plot, with the "goody guy" married to one of the
thieves. Parts of it don't work. Some of the scenes with David Niven drag.
Robert Wagner's character is in the way, rather than contributing to the
comedy. The resolution is a little pat, but turning the tables in court
works rather well.
"A Shot in the Dark" is brilliant, the best of the Sellars Clousseau movies.
The series steadily deteriorates.

I think "A Shot In The Dark" is actually another play completly and
that they just changed the detective to Clouseau. Sort of like "Room
Service" pre-exsisted on Broadway and was re-written to fit the Marx
Bros.

It was a different character? I thought Blake Edwards was trying to exploit
the success of the first film by putting the Clousseau character on stage.
So what was the character's name?

Paul Sevigne. He was a magistrate. A SHOT IN THE DARK is based on a play,
which itself was based on a play. Blake Edwards was brought in by
Peter Sellers when it wasn't working out. Edwards thought it would work
as a vehicle for Clouseau and he and Bill THE EXORCIST Blatty adapted
it for the character.

He was good in Inside Man.
I liked the new PP movie a lot more than I expected to. It wasn't the real
Clouseau (it's a reboot) but it was OK on its own terms.
