Agreed, New Voyages is probably the best with USS Exeter close behind.
Hidden Frontier has to be the worst, not only with bad acting but bad
casting (why is the kid a Captain and the fellow in his 50's a Lt?) and the
"virtual sets" are a tad distracting too.

Here's another TOS production http://www.starshipfarragut.com/ The acting
and production are not as good as NV or even Exeter, IMO.

I think the best production's Exeter, although they seem to have fallen into
an endless cycle of procrastination (the terrible danger of working without
a deadline) and I'll be amazed if we ever see the rest of their second
episode, the way things are going. I think they've got a better balance
betweens story and special fx than New Voyages, who are overdoing it on the
3D special effects thing, and Exeter's SECOND episode (i emphasise that
because the first one was shite) is far more professionally directed and
produced; if not for the sometimes a bit wobbly acting, it's like watching a
professional production. They've created some characters who are very
appealing too. NV seems rather stiff by comparison and the direction,
lighting etc don't impress me at all.

I haven't found any of the other fan films even slightly watchable, sadly.
Besides all else, the virtual sets are invariably appalling.

I had no idea these existed until reading this post. So I went and
downloaded the first ep of New Voyages. The sets and effects are excellent
for a homebrew production... what I could do without is the religious bits
(2 in the first ep with amazing grace) and the "zany bits" as I like to call
them (identified by the zany comedic music). There was way too many of
those. Also wouldn't mind seeing less references to other trek shows (the
counselor remark, the borg, the glimpse of the future). That's just fanboy
stroking and should be left out of any serious production.

But overall very impressive for what it is.
