While looking at some websites for that list of websites (OK, it was a
bad idea to go looking for websites, I was always going to get
distracted!), I came across some great cartoons.
In particular, I was reminded of the Nemi cartoons. They are
written/drawn by Lise Myhre, and mostly involve the day-to-day humour
and philosophy of Nemi, but occasionally mention her interests such as
Tolkien!
The strip is Norwegian, but also appears in the Metro newspaper in the
UK (which is where I first read it). I have found at least 8
Tolkien-related cartoons (now nine), but linking to them is a bit
tricky.
First, there is an unofficial site that has lots of the cartoons, but
you have to go past a few ads to get there, and they are random
selections, so I can't link to the ones I'm talking about:
http://www.nemi.tk/
Then there is the Metro archive here:
http://www.metro.co.uk/nemi
In that, I can find two Tolkien-related ones (the galleries are for
whole weeks, so you have to scroll down to get to the right day):
http://tinyurl.com/gmmx9 [6 July 2006]
http://tinyurl.com/ejc5j [3 May 2006]
As for the other 6, I thought I'd managed to link to them through that
other website, but the random cartoon generator foiled that. The best I
can do is to link to the original Norwegian versions at this website,
along with a separate link to the translations, but that doesn't work so
well. Can anyone work out how to link to the translations of individual
cartoons, or find somewhere where this is possible? Then I'll link to
the other ones I've found.

For some more random cartoons which mention Tolkien:

The list is still rather crude but it's getting there. Unfortunately
it's hard to search cartoons for specific Tolkien-related ones as you
can't search the text in the images.

Thanks for those comic links. How do you go about doing a gallery like
that? Do you contact the artist and say you want to do a gallery of
Tolkien-related cartoons from their strip?
I still want to do a page with those other Nemi cartoons, as I still
haven't been able to work out how to link to them.

Actually the general comics are just being used as Fair use, the Fraud
of the Rings collection however is used with permission from John Cook
and we help to promote his work and donate a spot on our servers to
him. John is a great guy and the collection on Tolkien Gateway is
actually the only free archive of Fraud of the Rings out there, even on
the official site you have to pay to view the images.
Most artists are quite willing to allow you to use their images as long
as you give them credit and a link back and as long as you're not out
to make a profit.
