Can't believe these temperatures here in the US right now! A lot of places
are pushing temps of 100-115 when you factor in the heat index. Nasty,
nasty time to be outside.
If you have animals outside, just a reminder to check their water a couple
times a day. You might even want to think about putting some ice in it for
them.

It's really boiling out there!
My first thought was "If that was Kelvin, you wouldn't have to put ice
in the pets' water!"

It's Fahrenheit but it feels like Celsius.

Yeah, I keep on having to force my 11-year-old cat to come inside. He
doesn't want to, because my grandma's dogs pester him, but I hate to
see him lying out there in the sunny drive way, panting. He's
overweight and has long fur, too, so it's really not good.
I'm also worried about the 2-day-old kittens under my porch bench,
though. The mother's a stray who my grandma feeds, but we don't want
any more pet cats, so we don't let her or her kittens inside the house.
Originally, she'd had the kittens in the dirt by the side of the
porch, but I managed to convince her to move them to a more sheltered
spot. Still, I wonder if there's anything I could do to keep them
cooler. Any suggestions?

Get them to the local humane society, or just call the humane society
and tell them about the cats. They might have staff trained in catching
strays.
The first couple of weeks can be rough for new kittens, even with the
mother still around. It's best if they're in a controlled environment,
and kittens are more likely to get adopted than older cats, typically.

Catching her isn't a problem. She now lets me pet her and even handle
her babies, but wouldn't it upset the mother to move her and her
newborn kittens to an unfamiliar place with humans she's never met
before? Wouldn't it be better to wait until they're a few weeks older?
There's an older kitten from a previous litter, too, but my grandma
wants to keep him around. Right now my cat, Vanyel, chases all the
other adult male cats away from our house except for my old cat,
Whiskers (I was eight when I named him, hence the lack of creativity.
=p), and Grandma likes that, but I'm moving soon and taking Van with
me, so she hopes the older kitten will take his place. She's also
resigned to the fact that the mother has adopted us, but I know she
doesn't want the new kittens to stay when they grow up. Now that we
can catch her, we aare going to spay the mother as soon as the kittens
are weened.
For now, though, I'm only concerned with keeping them cool.

Yep, I do that.
> I know how you feel about the cat magnet...I have 8 !
I've had up to 10. There were 9 living at my house when I had to
escape to my grandmother's three years ago because my mother had become
a slothith drunken mess and was impossible to live with. Now the house
belongs to me and I'm moving back after I get it repaired. Only two
cats are still there. I took two with me, one ran away, and the others
were all murdered by the horrible people my mother let live in the
house. The thing is, before she got so messed up, she really loved
those cats, but when they were killed, she was too drunk to care. My
dad has given her several chances to shape up and get back together
with us, but because we don't let her drink as much, she gets mad and
leaves. At this point, I'm pretty sure she's a lost cause.
Have I ever mentioned that I hate alcohol? I hate cigarettes, too, but
alcohol's worse. I hate it. It's terrible. It destroyed my family.
There. That's my second rant on the subject for today. I don't know
if I actually feel better, but I sure feel rightous.
