Some of these new Simpsons episodes seem to be getting really slack [message #298539] Mi, 12 Juli 2006 15:28

Many of the newer Simpsons episodes seem to have declined in humour.
They don't pack the comedic punch as well as the old episodes do,
though they do still carry the capacity to get a couple of laughs.
What's up with this??

Syrus must have just returned from the year 1995! He must have one of
those toaster-time machines!

To be fair, not many series (live or animated) have kept going this long.
All the 'easy' stuff has been done, so these days the writers have to dig
deeper, and use new techniques to keep the laughs coming.

One that was shown here in Australia recently was The Seemingly Never-Ending
Story, which used a very clever construct of stories within stories until
your mind whirled trying to keep up with them. Wouldn't appeal to everyone,
but top marks for trying something different.

As an aside, one of our public broadcasting radio stations is re-running old
episodes of Hancock's Half Hour, a classic British studio-with-audience
comedy from the 1950s and 60s. It is still funny, but if it were redone
today using current comedians, it would be terrible. So, treasure the old
Simpsons, but don't write off the new ones - they're different, not worse.

Yes, my time machine toaster never fails. I can't believe that
something so technologically advanced was made by Homer. Perhaps he
learnt a lot when he was in 3D land, wasting a fortune just standing
there.

I really think that he sorta stumbled onto the invention completely by
accident.
