Star Trek was, and is, total cheese and kitsch. Battlestar Galactica is
totally cool and hip with wicked special effects and hot babes. The
fans of the show are way cooler than trekkies too.

You are going to piss off some people and your remarks about the fans
are absurd, but the fact is you are basically right. As a scifi fan all
my life I never could stand Star Trek TOS, and even more TNG with it's
stupid left wing agenda.
BG is much better in any way you can imagine.

would have been a BG.

Left wing agenda? Please explain.

The world of TNG is sort of a left wingers paradise, no money, everyone
gets along (everyone on Earth at least), religion is considered a
superstition from the past, Earth has one government, etc.

In real life things wouldn't work that way of course.

Actually if it hadn't been for Star Wars, there never would have been a

Obviously not, there was a lot of science fiction written in those
years, and of course Star Wars was a bigger direct influence on BEG than
Trek was.

However considering what else was going on in those days I sure hope
something would have shown up on TV even if Star Trek hadn't come along,
but it's a cinch that Trek DID influence everything that followed.

Obviously not, there was a lot of science fiction written in those
years, but the only other thing I remember coming to the screen was 2001.

Unless you've invented a machine that can make anything you want out of
energy and a way of making energy that doesn't cost a dime. ;-)

And without resource scarcity, one government would probably do just fine
(since everyone would be getting along so well).

I kind of see ST as more of a right-wing "paradise" given all the sub-human
species that always seem to need civilizing from the enlightened and
benevolent hand of humanity. I mean humans get to choose their behavior but
not anyone else? I don't know but that always seemed a tad racist to me (or
maybe "specieist").

That is why it is a left wing paradise, on the contrary. Left wing
people (Liberals as they are called in the USA, while in Europe,
liberal means right wing economics) usually feel superior to others,
think they are more advanced and progressive than the others and that
they need to "educate" them in the right ways.

Everyone does that in the U.S. at least. Hell, we haven't had a really
conservative politician on the national landscape since Barry Goldwater (not
that I'd shill for him, mind you, although Hillary Clinton did :-).

Reagan was a great President, certainly the greatest President of the
second part of the 20th Century, if not the whole century, but he was
not as conservative as Barry Goldwater.

"Extremism in the defense of liberty is no vice; moderation in the
pursuit of justice is no virtue." - Barry Goldwater

However we DID have Senator Jesse Helms, he was (and is) a real
conservative, and if it wasn't for him Ronald Reagan probably never
would have become president.

Historically, we have observed many billions of people to grow up. And,
strange as it might seem, grown-ups keep right on using money, getting
into fights with one another, adhering to "superstitious" religions, and
so forth. Indeed, money, war, religion, and government were *invented*
by grown-ups to address actual grown-up concerns.

The original poster greatly exaggerated the extent to which ST:TNG
represented a "left winger's paradise", but you're making his case for
him. The idea that "grow up" means "abandon money, conflict, religion,
etc, to live in peace and harmony", is part of the recipe for the
classic "left winger's paradise", and it's not the part that has any
discernable connection to reality.

No they don't. So, what happens when supply is unexhaustable, demand

Ok, what were the Trek influences of Battlestar Galactica? Influences
that were original to Trek, and carried on in BSG.

For example, while like JTK, Starbuck was willing to bed anything
remotely female, this doesn't count due to Kirk could hardly be said to
have invented being a hound.

Nope. Historically we have observed many billions of people get older.
So far, few, (oh so very few) have grown up. I have in my life met 4
grown ups.

All the things invented by people to oppress other people are not the
works of grown ups, but those of old children who feel the need to show
how tough/smart/successful they are.

If you want to define the specie finally reaching maturity as 'left
wing' it's fine by me. The grown ups won't care at all.

IF that were to happen a LOT of people would sit around, get fat and do
nothing figuring society owes them a living. We get a lot of that NOW.

Faith, belief in a higher power, something bigger than yourself, doesn't
require priests. I believe in God, and have seen things that convince
me something more is going on than we understand, but that doesn't
require a priest.

Not that there is anything wrong with Clergy (well there are some Mad
Mullahs in the Middle East that need to be sent to Allah ASAP, but that
is another conversation!)

Exactly true. Organized religion and I had a parting of the way when I

Are you speaking for yourself here? I on the other hand think more of
people, having the example of retired people who, having all their basic
needs met, seek to improve themselves in various ways.

Bill Gates never hasn't needed to work for many years, yet showed up
for work daily, AND runs one of the world's premier private charities.

Scratch a believer and you'll find a mindless mass murderer in waiting.

Don't forget about the pedophiles and homos who abuse children by
taking advantage of their position in society.

Or were those kids just asking for it?

It was supposed to be funny, but yeah, it actually IS my considered
position. I don't think there will be a time when supply is
inexhaustable and demand is met - outside of a fantasy world like Star
Trek (which, btw, I enjoy immensely - at least everything this side of
Enterprise and possibly Voyager).

Ah yes - so you came to your considered position on religion at age 9.
Very nice.

That's just about the age that the pedophiles and homos get interested

I decided it was just a bunch of bullshit when a nun came up behind me
and saw me drawing a picture of a rocket. When she asked why I was
drawing it, I told her someday man would land on the Moon. This was
back in 1955 before the NASA/Sputnik era. She yelled as loud as she
could so the rest of the class would hear that I was really stupid
because man would never put anyone on the Moon.

Fucking leftist queers.

It followed the beating I got for questioning the bible, personally
delivered by the good Reverend of my mother's Baptist Church. I learned
to keep my mouth shut, and to hate the abject applied ignorance of
unquestioning faith very very much.

My crime? Noting that his sermon about the vessel in Solomon's temple
that was 30 cubits around and 10 cubits across would have a pi of 3. We
had just covered pi in math class, and were Solomon's vessel couldn't
exist in our universe. I asked why the bible was wrong.

It was only 25 years later that I got to piss on that raving asshole's
grave, quite literally.

I embarked on a search for a religion that made sense in my late teens,
making my way through most of the Chisto/Judaic/Moslem sects, finding
that they all believe pretty much the same silly crap. Of all the
religions I have found only the Wicca hadn't killed anyone recently, but
do they ever believe in their own brand of silly crap.

Who have the Christians killed recently?

You would probably have more luck in that endeavour, if you would deign to
speak in some commonly-understood language like English. Your apparent
insistence on speaking some strange language which uses the same words as
English, but ascribes to them widely different meanings, is the sort of
childish behavior that most grown-ups have little patience with.

Well, I'm not interested in getting into a long debate about the merits
or believability of Christianity vs. anything else, certainly not in
this forum.

But I did want to say that I'm sorry you were treated so poorly in the
church. That was wrong, and I think most Christians would acknowledge
that.

Hope that you find (or have found) whatever it is that you're looking
for.

The Indiana legislature once tried to pass a law that pi is 3.1

That was to be followed by a law that stated that all circles must
have 4 sides.

"Growing up" has nothing to do with it. This sort of perspective
is just liberal self loathing. Humans are the way they are because it was
beneficial for them to be that way for the 99% of their existence before
overwhelming and large coercive social structures existed.

The original TOS kind of had the right idea.

Even if you did manage to impose this "socialist paradise" there
would be a good portion of the population (at least 40%) that would feel
the need to escape their guilded cage in a very Kirk-esque fashion. People
would be fleeing the Federation as if it were Blakes 7 Federation.
