I contacted "Birdlegs" Youmans in an attempt to get a CD (even though
he does religious music now), in order to play one of his songs on my
Zappa Universe radio show (www.radiofreephoenix.com). I asked him about
the recording of Sleep Dirt, and here's what he said (slightly edited):
Hi Tom,
I only do bluegrass gospel music now. Might be a bit of a left turn
from Zappa's music, but it's the music I love and embrace at this point
in my life. I've learned a lot of things both musical and spiritual
since my Zappa days.
As for sleep dirt, I don't remember how many takes we did in the
studio, and we never performed it live while I was in the band because
we were just recording it at that time and it was released well after I
left. It was recorded at Caribou studios near Nederlands Colorado.
That was quite an experience recording there in that environment with
such a musical giant. You have no idea how truly talented a composer
this man was. His best work has yet to be released if it ever will be.
It requires orchestras which probably would not understand it. But
who knows. Stranger things have happened. Bach was not nearly as well
thought of in his day as he later became. Zappa was certainly able to
"think outside the box"!
God bless you,
Bird Youmans

Tom,
Thanks so much for sharing that. Wow, what a great message.

Tom,
that was just tremendous and the best post
here in many a long day. Thank you.
(I was going to say it was f---ing tremendous
but in this context that doesn't seem appropriate.)

so goes the alt.fan.FZ Anti-Smut Loyalty Oath. How about: it was divinely
tremendous? I noticed a spelling error in one of the writeups quoted here
recently where he is called "Birdlegs Humans." In the final analysis we all
tremble (the Latin origin of tremendous) in the same fashion.
