what is supposed to be the difference between Phasers and Disrupters? I
realize the klingons and romulans use disrupters while phasers are used
by the federation.

Disruptors are inferior to phasers. The Klingons and Romulans buy them
at Target.

My understanding (from non-canon novels) was that lasers, phasers,
blasters, hand grenades etc. delivered energy to a targetted spot.
Disrupters "somehow" suppress the forces that bond molecules and atoms
together.
General rule of thumb: If it's green, it's usually a disrupter
beam/pulse. That, or some sort of liquor.
