Abrams Says Star Trek Report Inaccurate
April 25, 2006
Empire Online caught up with Mission: Impossible III director J.J.
Abrams who said that Friday's report that he will produce and direct the
11th Star Trek feature is not entirely accurate.
"The whole thing was reported entirely without our cooperation," Abrams
said. "People learned that I was producing a 'Star Trek' film, that I
had an option to direct it, they hear rumors of what the thing was going
to be and ran with a story that is not entirely accurate."
Variety said the film will center on the early days of seminal "Trek"
characters James T. Kirk and Mr. Spock, including their first meeting at
Starfleet Academy and first outer space mission.
But the Lost and Alias creator said that "We've made a pact not to
discuss any specifics." Abrams is a big fan of the Original Series,
however, so don't be surprised if his film does take place around the
era of Kirk and Co. "Those characters are so spectacular. I just think
that... you know, they could live again."

Wow. Wouldn't it be wonderful to have someone who was a FAN of the
original series do the movie?

That won't help it not suck. Fans have made ST movies before that sucked
hard.

Yep, I was just about to post that.
Talk about trying to shut the stable door after the horse has long
gone, died of natural causes, been made into glue that has dried and
gone brittle.
Shock, horror! Reporters not being accurate!? Surely not. :-\
We all know the first thing they learn in 'Reporter School' is "report
now, be first, worry about facts later". (The second thing is "how to
fake your expenses".)
Conspiracy theorists will say that Abrams / Paramount purposely
"leaked" that story idea to see how well it flies with fan opinions.
There's been a bit of complaint from many people, so now they're trying
to cover their ... err, backs by saying "that wasn't our idea". That
last quote pretty much proves that they are at least thinking along
those story lines.

Who (that matters) would seriously be against that idea?

On second thought...
Since when have TPTB showed any interest in what fans think? Do any of
you seriously believe that what fans think matters to those bozos?

They should do after the Enterprise and Nemesis debacles.

Not necessarily. Many of the "remakes" / update movies coming out of
Hollyweird over the last few years have been done by SUPPOSED fans of
the original, and yet they still made them into horrible messes bearing
little resemblance to the original. :-(

The news spread to LOTS of places, not just here, and not just Star
Trek fan messageboards for that matter. :-)

Couldn't hurt.
In the past, Abrams has said that his favorite show as a kid, the show
that influenced him the most, was The Twilight Zone.
And Abrams' TV shows do tend toward the quirky and offbeat; "Lost"
obviously owes a lot to "Twilight Zone." Good or bad, I think ST 11
might turn out to be the most unusual Star Trek movie of all.

Even more "unusual" than that 'Save the Whales' rubbish?? Oh dear,
we're in real trouble now. :-(

Paramount, and most movie studios, want someone who will bring in the
largest possible merchandise buying audience. A fan would want a movie
the fans enjoy. Two vastly different directions.

After over a quarter of a century of watching Trek movies, I'm reminded of
my favorite Rule of Aquisition: Hear all, believe nothing. We're reportedly
2 years away from the movie coming out (provided it does), so take any
rumors of a specific plot with a grain of salt at this point. Trek movies
are notorious for being constantly revised. The Big Bads in ST III were
supposed to be Romulan at one point, as was Dr. Soran in Generations.
Berman's out of the mix, it'll be fine.

Of course this idiot hasn't seen the film but he just KNOWS it's gonna
be bad. Singer is a fine director, the 2 X-men's were entertaining at
the very least. Now, X-men 3, with hack Brett Ratner at the helm, could
be a cause for concern.

You know, "horrid beyond belief" accurately describes at least half of
the Star Trek movies... but they entertained millions, and made money
anyway.

Horrid beyond belief is probably over generous. People are quitting their
jobs rather than continue working on it.
