It appears that Data IS able to formulate contractions whenever he really
wants to... he does it in song, but also in the episode in which he gets a
SF girlfriend (can't recall the title offhand", he comes through the door
into her quarters saying "Honey, I'm home" as well as "You're not my
mother!"
There was also the first or second season episode where he had to set a
temporal anomaly right by inserting a rod into a power stream. When several
copies of him appear in the room, the one that completes the task shouts
"It's me!" when one of the others asks which one is real.
Any other examples?

The one I remember is from season one. Episode 4 (The Last Outpost) when
the crew is talking to Portal, Data says, "I'm afraid not."
Firstly a contraction, secondly... Data is "afraid?" Hmm...

Uhh.. I hope it isn't necessary for me to say this, bit it's not that
"Data can't use contractions" but rather it's the case that he was
specifically programmed NOT to use them so that he would appear as less
human so that the colonists would not fear him as they feared Lore.
So if he's singing or quoting or something of course he could pronounce
them. As for when he had a girlfriend, my guess would be that the
contractions were a special part of his new subroutine and therefore generic
quotes of common lines. (Honey I'm home!)

I hate when people write this. Anybody in a newsgroup has too much time.
Thanks Dough, good catch! I always knew there had to be some contractions
burried in there somewhere.

That whole thing never made sense anyway. I mean,
Data does plays and stuff. What if his script says
"I can't"? Is he meant to be incapable of saying
the line or something?

That's right -- he can't.

That's a bit of a contradiction...... as it's been proved otherwise

Well, TECHNICALLY, Data isn't supposed to be able to use contractionss (as
pointed out in the episode with Lal in it), but TPTB at Trek were never all
that hung up on continuity, so sometimes Roddenberry (and Berman later) let
things slip a little.
