I am looking for a skilled writer/lawyer interested in writing "The Law
of Star Trek" based on my treatment of same. I will provide the
treatment, support and editing, and then will self-publish and market
the book. The work wil be presented as a co-authored venture, and
profits, if any, will be shared 50/50 after expenses.

If you have an interest please e-mail me for further info:

And you can follow it with the Tax Code of Star Trek. Or maybe a volume of
Federation Building Codes.

The sciences are an area of knowledge which expands in an interesting way as
time moves forward, thus making them a fascinating topic of extrapolation
and speculation for science fiction fans.

Law, being akin more to philosophy crossed with regulations, is far more
subjective. Which is why science fiction fans won't be interested in a book
drawing from the references to laws and rights in the Trek franchise.

ISTM anyway Trek hasn't said much about law, certainly civil law. In fact
we've seen little of the Federation outside the military. I find it mildly
disturbing sometimes that this utopian fantasy seems to be largely a benign
military dictatorship.

For instance; property law. There doesn't seem to be any credible economic
system even attempted at in Trek. A vague "everyone has what they need
[somehow] provided". But property rights are at the centre of law. I've not
watched the post-TOS series' exhaustively enough, but I can't really think
of anywhere that issues of land and property are directly addressed (other
than in a frontier kind of "settler" way- and even there what comes to mind
is the Federation having authoritarian control). Nobody seems to get paid,
so how they buy each other birthday presents I don't know. Perhaps you put
in a request to the birthday present committee or something.

Anyway. Most of the law we've seen has been miltiary law (e.g. Court
Martial, The Measure Of A Man) and I'd imagine it's not very exciting or
consistent either. Trek is a story about the military- the society at large
is just a vaguely sketched backdrop.

One of the old Star Trek books by Franz Joseph Designs (forget the
title) included the Fundamental Declaration of the Martian Colonies and
the Organian Peace Treaty. I never bothered to read them because, as
you say, I was more interested in the techie stuff.
