Star Trek: The New Voyages question [message #190274] Sa, 31 Dezember 2005 02:38
Daniel Damouth
I just read about this in "Wired" and am checking it out. Do people
have thoughts on the amateur/semi-pro production "Star Trek: The New
Voyages"? (http://www.newvoyages.com/)

I have just started watching them. The effects in the avi version
could be better. Does anyone know if they look better in the DVD
version? I'll dl it if I have to. I sort of wish there were a
middling-quality version, say a typical 400 meg file. Instead we have
to choose between a 100 meg .wmv and a 3+ Gig DVD.

Also, I wasn't able to construct the final part of episode 1 using
WinRAR. WinRAR keeps claiming it needs the second .rar, even though
the second .rar is right there. If someone out there has it complete
(I'm referring to Part05 of "In Harm's Way") I'd appreciate an ftp
pointer or something.

I view fanfilms a bit like community theater. There's less budget and
quality of the acting is going to vary from rivalling tv or movies to ...
well ... enthusiastic fans putting on a show. If you know that going in then
you're in a better position to appreciate them. That said, not all fanfilms
are the same, some are far worse than others and some a far better than
others (e.g., STAR WARS: REVELATIONS, BATMAN: GRAYSON, or the legendary STAR
WARS: TROOPS).

I liked the second STAR TREK: NEW VOYAGES' "The Doomsday War". It was a big
improvement over the first, and pert near impossible to find, episode (at
least it was a year ago). Last I heard they were going to make a 3rd
episode.

Meanwhile you might want to check out STAR TREK: HIDDEN FRONTIER. They just
announced they are going to be ramping up soon for the SEVENTH and final
season (they make a new episode about every other month, for a six-episode
season). I'd love to see it adapted as a tv show or adapt some of the season
finales for movies. There standard resolution episodes (25-35 minutes) are
about 100 megs, but they also distribute a HD version by bittorrent.

P.S. And the same holds true for fanfiction. Some feel well-written and some
are not. And even those that are well-written, some are "truer" to the
source material, in capturing the "voice" and sensibility of the show than
others.

I watched some of that...
The Exeter people are doing some interesting stuff as well.

The second one was definitely better. I have the first one in DVD
format and it doesn't make the special effects any better. That doesn't
really matter though. TOS didn't have very good special effects at all,
but I still love it. And New Voyages being a continuation of TOS, I
look forward to more episodes.

You haven't seen the first part of the next one yet?
Extremely cool!
Plus some extra footage of the night shift on the Exeter bridge. Very funny.

Are they ever going to show this on TV? It might be worth watching.

My thoughts are that for all the time and money they put into it, they
sure make it tough to download them.

I did manage to watch one of them. Campy but kinda cool.

I seriously doubt that.
Maybe if they hand their souls over to Paramount.

Cheese. Well meaning cheese, but still cheese. The first ep is a Mary Sue
story, and the second is a nearly incoprehensible time travel story. I'll
probably download the next one, just to see what they do with a Dorothy
Fontana script, but I'm not optimistic. *

What kind of niggled me with the second one was that trekkies, of all
people, should be such nitpickers that they'd not leave a gaping flaw in the
time travel aspect of the story, but they did. The Farragut goes into the
giant Guardian Of Forever- and the Enterprise comes back out. But since the
timeline had been corrected, either nothing should have come back out or,
more likely, the Farragut should have, resulting in Starfleet having a spare
starship, not to mention a spare Jim Kirk. I think the whole thing was a bit
over-ambitious for them, really. It'll be interesting to see how this DC
Fontana script pans out. I just wish Elvis Kirk would stop doing that really
bad impression of Shatner.

One other thing- at the current rate of production, by the time they get to
the end of Season 4 the cast will be old enough to play the characters
they're portraying :)

Another appeal of HIDDEN FRONTIERS is they do an ep about every 60 days.

The "Upward Foundation" in Phoenix AZ, 623-848-9725, 623-247-6142, are liars
and scam artists. They make junk phone calls often several times a day to
the same number and refuse to remove you from their calling list (they will
give you a non working number to call to be removed, and the contact address
on their website is phony). This has been going on for a decade. Do not
