Melvin Belli in a dress was pretty disturbing.

I never thought that was "rape"--Charlie was too young to understand the
feelings he was having. I thought he was making a pass at her.
There was a time in this country where a guy could "steal a kiss" from a
woman without being accused of rape.

I'm surprised you omitted the evil Kirk's attempted rape and beating of
Yeoman Rand in "The Enemy Within."

Huh? Maybe he took advantage of her crush a little, but he never really
came close to hitting on her.

Hee hee! But NO. That was a female.

Not one of my top picks for shocking. Spock and Kirk fighting to the
death for T'Pring was more shocking.

You already had a Charlie X one. No point.

IMHO, no.
IMHO, the single most disturbing scene was when Kirk stopped McCoy from
saving Edith Keeler, in "City on the edge of forever".
I also think that the scene of Spock taking out innocent starfleet
personnel as he abducts the invalid Captain Pike (Menagerie) is pretty
sickening.
I really hated "Wolf in the fold" which has scene after scene that seems
to make dear Scotty look like a heartless serial killer. THAT SUCKED!
What about the sicko M5 computer killing innocent starfleet vessels in
what should have been a harmless war-games exercise? And then the
surviving vessels attacked the Enterprise!?
Look, TOS was full of shocking/exciting moments. We had at least one
every episode.

I thought much more shocking was Spock throwing the soup and Chapel out of
his quarters ("Amok Time")

That scene wasn't so shocking, they were already in Bizarro world. I
thought much weirder in that vein was Kirjk hurling racial epithets at
Spock, and Spock almost bashing his head in, to shake off the effects of the
spores. BTW, where can I get one of those spore plants? ;]

Again, a much more disturbing version exists. The bad Kirk almost raping
Yeoman Rand, and then later when she's accusing Kirk and the injured guy
bursts in, "It was you, sir!"
That's my opinion, anyway.

That scene is in my personal top ten. Not only because the very idea of
rape (on 1960's TV!) is shocking, but because the concept of good-guy
Kirk as the rapist is shocking. He's not (usually) that kind of a guy.

IMO they went further over-the-top when she used that plant to seduce
Kirk.

I was more "disturbed" by the accent of the crazy lady accusing Kirk of
being a witch. Every time I watch that ep now I keep expecting her to
start throwing cats at him.

Far more disturbing was Passionate Kirk trying to rape her in "Enemy
Within" (I know it's a seperate thread, but I always saw them as
Passionate Kirk and Introspective/Rational Kirk, not "good Kirk" and
"evil Kirk").

Yes ... when McCoy says "He's dead" ... well, you know he
can't be dead, he's the star, but it was a shock.
I still wish they'd used the marvelous lines that James
Blish had in his adaptation for when Kirk comes to in
Sick Bay:
Kirk: You, sir, are a quack.
McCoy: Well, I admit I made a little mistake. Injected
you with <?> instead of TriOx. Nobody lied;
you were dead -- by all normal standards. Of
course, I had to get you up here really quickly,
or you'd have been dead by *any* standards...

Even after all these years, I have to close my eyes rather than watch
Ensign Harper die in the engine room. Why that one more than other
similar deaths I don't know, like the lightning zapped guy in "The Apple"
or the first guy that dies in "Arena" ("Captain, I see something!")
Perheps it's because the poor guy in "The Ultimate Computer" was doing a
routine job that shouldn't have been dangerous. I feel like applauding
the Teer in "Friday's Child." After being a villain for most of the
episode, he makes a noble sacrifice by stepping into the line of fire to
draw the Klingon out.

Not if it was EVIL Kirk doing that.

P.S. For 60's tv, I would think the Kirk / Uhura kiss--gasp ...
interracially--would be the shocker.

You should read the TNG book "Immortal coil. " It tells how M5
finally dies... (but it's in a worthy way, and it's really well tied
in with TOS)

The most shocking scene has got to be where Kirk stops McCoy from
saving Edith Keeler in the Ellison episode.

I didn't consider T'Pau's statement that "This fight is to the death" to
be a real shock. It was definitely a plot twist though.

No, this wasn't a real shock either. Because we already knew that the
alien was instigating violent behavior.

Not a real shock. We knew in advance from Spock's statement "Edith
Keeler must die" that Kirk would have to do this. It was only a
question of how and when. Tragic, definitely. Shocking, no. If
anything, the shock was Spock discovering that Edith would have to die.

Nah, he used his Vulcan neck pinch. Just like he did to that crewman in

You keep confusing "shocking" with "exciting," "tragic," or (to use a
Spockism) "fascinating."
You need a dictionary.

FWIW, I think there are few genuinely shocking moments. In terms of daring,
I'd say Chekov's attempted rape of Kang's wife- it's shot in such a way that
there's no doubt what he intends even though it's not explicitly stated (60s
TV and all that). It's a lot more daring than other attempted rapes e.g.
Evil Kirk/Rand because they tended to portray rape back then as a kind of
forced kissing which, although unpleasant, doesn't really carry the same
weight. The very closeup camerawork in the scene in Day Of The Dove, though,
makes it definitely disconscerting to watch.
Also shocking is Chapel's line in What Are Little Girls Made Of. "DID you?"
following Korby's plea that he "couldn't love an android". There's no doubt
she's implying something physical, not romantic- the phrase "to love" being
turned unavoidably by the context and delivery of the line into meaning "to
have sex with", in a time when "love" was often used as a euphemism for sex.
The line's beautifully delivered by Majel Barrett and, in terms of the
times, genuinely shocking, I think.

I disagree.
In the aftermath in Sick Bay, Janice's face has been badly bruised as if
she received a beating (though we didn't see her get beaten on camera).
It was seeing her roughed up that made the attempted rape so shocking.
In terms of daring, the scene in "A Private Little War" in which Nona
does her ritual to heal Kirk's Mogatu wound was the most daring. The
only way Roddenberry could have gotten away with that scene, was if the
NBC censors were too stupid to understand the blatant sexual symbolism.

Oh, good call! Its one of those things that, if you originally watched TOS
as a little kid, you don't get. And when you re-watch the show as a
teenager, you go, "whoa! She's saying...whoa!"
Makes you think Majel Barret is a really good dramatic actress. There were
moments in her TNG appearances that suggested this too, which made it a
shame they wasted her on a character who was a comic farce, and not even a
very good one.

I think they realized they were wasting her as a comic farce by
the third season (her fourth appearance?) "Menage a Troi". They
certainly gave her some scenes with meat on them in "The Cost of
Living", "Half a Life", and "The Dark Page". And let us not
forget DS9:"The Forsaken" (looking that up, I see there is a
sequel to that, "The Muse", but I don't remember anything from
her performance there, only Rene's as Odo).
And, of course, as Number One in the pilot, and one of the
Emperor's widows on Babylon 5 (episode?)

Having met Ms. Barret a few years back, I can assure you that as Lwaxanna,
she wasn't acting. That's more or less her real life personality! (well,
except the man-crazy part).

I'm not sure that the terminology "Good" and "Evil" Kirk is entirely
appropriate, since they are merely two aspects of the same person.
However, I admit, that it's probably the quickest way to differentiate the
two, however inaccurate the terms.

Isn't that the whole point of the story- that he's split into his good and
evil sides? The message seems to be that as humans the character traits
which are considered bad are necessary in moderation e.g. without a limited
degree of avarice we'd be unmotivated to achieve anything, without lust we'd
have no desire, and without a certain degree of self-serving disinterest in
the effects of our actions on others, we'd be too indecisive to make the
kinds of decisions that an effective leader must make.
The premise of the story may be a trifle hokey, but that's okay. It's a
parable, and quite a good one I think. Without our capacity for negative
behaviour, we'd be much less than we are.

What on earth did you say to set off this latest level of invective? I

Saying things and having it be so are two seperate things.
One can believe one is right *at the time one posts something*, (e.g.
my prediction that "Threshold" would invoke time travel by their fourth
ep); but the second part of sanity is the capacity for self-analysis,
and the capability of realizing when one is in error.
