HUGE NEWS: big "New Voyages" article in Dec WIRED [message #166142] So, 20 November 2005 17:03

The latest issue of Wired magazine has a magnificent 8-page article
about the Star Trek: New Voyages crew and their fan-created TOS episodes.

It's a totally respectful article that goes into deep detail. You will
love it.

Check out the New Voyages at http://www.newvoyages.com/

This is some serious fanfic, and they are getting the serious respect
that they are due. Check out "To Serve All Of My Days": written by
D.C. Fontana, and featuring an appearance from Walter Koenig.

Okay, this is just plain cool!
Thank you for posting the link!

Star Trek lives!

You have this 'New Voyages' and there are also the 'Exeter' people doing
good....
TOS has made an impact on our world and culture that has brought a sense of
wonder and inspiration.
May it continue to do so!

Boy, you can say that again!

I'll bet they would have a great guest star role for you:

From what I have been able to watch they have done an incredible job. I
have not been able to see much of what they have done. I have perhaps the
fastest internet connection available on this planet and downloads of
episodes can take 10 hours for one part at 7 MB per second. They could
charge $30 a month for the new episodes on a fast server and I would pay it.
This is great stuff and the people behind would not make a profit to just
serve it in a way that cable and dell users could get it. I was only able to
download one opening episode and the rest had errors that would not let me
open in a RARE file after hours of waiting.
If they would charge for bandwidth only the Nazi boys at Paramount would
have no case. They could put full episodes in high quality DIVX AVI files on
the main server and anyone with a fast connect could have an episode in an
hour at most. This is a labor of love and I hope paramount never goes after
them.
If I know one thing it is that a huge company with a brand name to
protect will crucify anyone they can to protect it. I used to go by Barbie
in the porn world. Now it is Barbi after a year long fight with Mattel.
Corporations can be and are evil.

You seem to be having a lot of problems :( IIRC they distribute the files by
bittorrent (that's how I got mine and they don't take that long down my
2Mb/s connection). Also, they post them to usenet- alt.binaries.startrek,
and that'll go as fast as your usenet server. There wouldn't be much point
paying 30 bucks a month for something that only comes out once or twice a
year :)

Yes, the corporate beast can be evil, but you have to see both sides. Humans
identify with simple attributes, both in visual terms and language, and
brand names are important for that reason. We're all very brand conscious.
Indeed, most of us here will be more prepared to try a show or other thing
if it has Star Trek written on it. Even Star Trek: Enterprise.

Look at it from the other side. Imagine you've created something hot. It
took you years of investment in time and money, but it was worth it, you
have a brand. Now somebody else comes along and starts selling a copy of it.
They didn't have to make the investment. They're piggy-backing on your
success. Suddenly, you'd get a very strong urge to protect your brand. I
think on that level Paramount are understandable in not wanting everybody
else making Star Treks.

And to be honest, fun as the New Voyages are, if I were paying for it I'd
really expect some decent actors of appropriate ages (though at the rate
they're going, by the end of Season 4 they will be), some decent directing
and so on. And a better looking Rand as well, with _that_ hairdo.

Still, I'm looking forward to Dorothea Fontana's script. That should be
quite a treat :)
