| Refunds from the TrekUnited campaign. Yes they are happening. I got one. [message #1646] |

My first refund has been completed from TrekUnited.
I said I would post on my status.
Many claimed that TrekUnited was a scam and even when documentation
was provided to 3rd party reporters to investigate and they said that
it was legit, continued to lie about trekunited.
I made 3 donations over a month or so. So I should be a good gauge.
The first one is now refunded and completed minus 3%. This is actually
less then the 5% agreed to. So I got more back than agreed to in the
contract.
Info on why that is here........
http://www.trekfansunited.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=3856 &hl=
I will post status on the remaining two donations I made as they come
in.
They are working their butts off to get everything back to folks.
There are thousands of donors.
I think it is important that people know for FACT it was no scam.
Yes, I wouldnt mind an apology from those that said it was.
Aint holdin' my breath on that one though!

OK, they are returning money (supposedly, to you) - they get ONE bonus
point.
BUT, how much was removed in "fees" and what's happening with the huge
pile of bank interest that the (again, supposed) $3million would have
accumulated??

Just so long as you limit your apology to those who "falsely" called it a
scam. No need to apologize for the others.

TrekUnited never got the money. They got a pledge. If Paramount had accepted the
offer than TrekUnited would've recieved the funds.

Yeah, right. Like any bank actually has "non-interest bearing
accounts". Only stupid people would use them and the bank would be
laughing all the way to themselves. :-\

I guess you're not familiar with the concept of an escrow account. Come
back when you've finished high school, and maybe you'll have learned about
such things.

Of course I've heard of the concept, but if you really think anyone
actually uses them, then I've got a Snow Ski Lodge in Florida you might
like to buy. At the VERY least the bank themselves is making interest
off the money. :-(

Thanks. It may not have been perfect idea, but it was an attempt by
fans from the heart, trying to do something positive about something
they cared about.. In hindsight, I think Dominic Keating had the right
idea. Use the money for lobbying and paying
professional lobbyists. Getting ads on TV etc. Actually spend the
money. If the campaign trailer had run on TV in 10 large cities during
the show........I wonder.
But the whole problem with many fans was the contribution part.
Double edged sword I guess.
I sure would have liked to see that trailer run during the show at
least once though.
Next year is the 40th anniversary. Maybe paramount will throw us a
bone and do something for the fans.

I'm in the mortgage business. Lots of intelligent people use escrow
accounts. I would have been worried if the money was not in an escrow
account. Escrow accounts have special restrictions on how and with whom
the money is spent. For that service, the financial institution pockets
any interest.
Also, I believe the three million was in "pledges" and only the hundred
and fifty grand was actually in cash.

I don't. IMO, the whole effort was mis-guided. It failed to acknowledge one
key fact: For season 4, Enterprise was *already running on borrowed time*.
The network had wanted to cancel it last year, but a concerted, energetic
fan campaign accomplished what few fan campaigns ever had - it actually
worked, helped convince the network to give Enterprise one last chance.
But you only get to dip from that well once. You might be able to convince
someone that the reason they lost money one year was a "fluke" that can be
rectified by sticking it out one more year, but when they do that and lose
money yet again, hell it's all over.

Hopefully, but doubtfully.

Way way down the list. My forum participation and thoughts impressed them
enough to be invited to help in a few areas. As McCoy said in ST-TMP....they
used a little known reserve activation clause...they drafted me! I was more
then happy to do what I could.
Never met anyone. Shared the cause. Tried to spread the word best I could
here. Usenet is a very tough crowd if your not used to it. However, it is
easily googled and I felt that there had to be a presence here for TU. Was I
the best one? Probably not, but I did this on my own, nobody told me to from
TU. Just my own passion for Trek. I only lurked and occasionally posted in
Trek groups before.
After this whole thing I am even more a fan of Trek because I have seen what
amazing people other fans are. And I mean amazing fans. Not the dopes in the
basement wearing costumes at 40 years old. I mean the heros in orbit wearing
hard earned uniforms with flags of their nations on them. Or little kids that
love the show and dream big because no one has told them not to yet.
TU is still there. Al Vinci is still giving it a shot. Even SyFy portal admits
he talked to an exec now. Now THAT is amazing coming from them!
Drop by if you want to see whats going on.
It just star trek fans. We dont bite. Much.

Don't be falsely modest. You defended TU as well as was possible. :)

I haven't dropped by since the money ticker stopped working last week. ;)

Damn son, you insist on wading ever deeper in to Lake Ignorance. People use
escrow accounts all the time in the business world. A given amount of money
is agreed to be paid once a set of conditions are met (goods pass inspection
or customs, some kind of certification occurs, an appraisal is made, etc.).
Sure, the bank is making interest off the money. But that still makes it a
"non-interest bearing account".
Have you ever considered just admitting it when you're wrong, rather than
making an even bigger ass out of yourself? Well, like I said, maybe by the
time you finish high school....if you ever do.

If those transactions are paid for by credit card you're going to be paying
4 -5 cents on a dollar
for the transaction. Not such a good deal when you're only keeping 3 %
LOL
I find it so humorous people are still trying to make something nefarious
out of trek united
even after the money is being refunded.

Well TU could just come out and give an accounting, but it won't. On its
web site it says it will only provide such information to institutions such
as "the BBC." Reason given: TU does not want to give ammo to others to be
used against it. Says it right there on the web site. So TU will have to
put up with questions and scepticism while asking everyone to rely on only
anecdotes about refunds.
I'm not asking for an accounting or that the records, or that some of the
records, be shown. But so long as they keep them hidden, they will have to
expect questions. It's healthy.

I Don't Think anybody (even those who donated) expected to make enough
money. the best thing that could happen was to make a big enough noise that
paramount and the network would see that Enterprise still had a substantial
following, and put the money in themselves.
While I didn't particularly want Enterprise saving, i Think Star Trek fans
have made enough noise with their donations to Ensure a future for the Star
Trek franchise. If you dont think that was worth 5% then you don't donate.
I donated knowing it would fail, and i would loose 5% but it was worth it to
tell the people in power that WE are here, and we want Star Trek. (Money
Talks!)

Agreed, i hope any money that goes to charity is donated publicly. i don't
normally think Gifts should be made a display of, but maybe if its done so,
people won't be able to acuse them of anything.

You would have had WAY more success if it was a campaign to raise money
to hire a hitman to rid us of B&B. ;-)

I think we should get a new Star Trek series in the not too distant future
now, and hopefully the views of the fans will be considered and Coto will be
in control, if not Roddenbery jnr.

They never took possession of the 3 million I thought.
