| Chapter Titles Quiz (Silmarillion) [message #15886] |

I've just typed out a chapter list for 'The Silmarillion' as part of
plans to do a Chapter-of-the-week series of discussions, and I thought a
few quiz-style questions on the chapter titles might be interesting...
<eg>
The classic question would be to name, in order, all of the 24 chapter
titles for /Quenta Silmarillion/, but as I only got 20 of them (with a
few mistakes in the order as well), we can't do that! Though you may
need to for the final question... <eg>
Here is the chapter list, with the /Quenta Silmarillion/ chapter titles
snipped. The questions follow the list:
<BEGIN QUOTE>
Foreword
Ainulindalë
Valaquenta
Quenta Silmarillion (24 chapters)
<snip>
Akallabêth
Of the Rings of Power and the Third Age
Tables
Genealogies
I - The House of Finwë
II - The Descendents of Olwë and Elwë
III - The House of Bëor
IV and V - The House of Hador and the People of Haleth
The Sundering of the Elves
Note on Pronunciation
Index of Names
Appendix: Elements in Quenya and Sindarin names
<END QUOTE>
Quiz questions on /Quenta Silmarillion/ chapter titles:
1) What word do all the chapter titles have in common?
2) Name at least 10 of the 13 people named in the chapter titles.
3) Who is named twice in the chapter titles?
4) Which two people have chapter titles all to themselves?
5) Name the first chapter.
6) Name the penultimate chapter.
7) Who dies in a chapter title?
8) Name three (or maybe four) pairs of people in the chapter titles.
9) Which chapter title contains a colon?
10) Name the 14th chapter.

I know that . . .

I'm sure that Thingol and Melian has one in common.
Wait! Isn't the 'Aulë and Yavanna' chapter in the QS?
(going back up to add them to the list in 2)
Hmm
Lúthien and Beren?

I won't begin to correct myself already -- I didn't do quite as well as
I had hoped, but nowhere near as badly as I had feared, so I'm satisfied
;-)
I just have one comment:
<snip>

There are definitely four pairs of equals in the chapter titles ;-)

Turin, Tuor, Hurin, Beren, Luthien, Thingol, Melian, Feanor, Fingolfin,

I'll try this before reading everyone else's...
1) What word do all the chapter titles have in common?
"Of".
2) Name at least 10 of the 13 people named in the chapter titles.
Aule
Beren
Earendil
Feanor
Luthien
Maeglin
Melian
Melkor (not Morgoth!)
Thingol
Turgon
Turin Turambar
Tuor
Yavanna
(There may be some wrong answers in there but I'm confident at least 10
of them are right.)
3) Who is named twice in the chapter titles?
Feanor?
4) Which two people have chapter titles all to themselves?
Maeglin, Turin Turambar
5) Name the first chapter.
D/K
6) Name the penultimate chapter.
Of Tuor and the Fall of Gondolin? I think Of the Voyage of Earendil &
the War of Wrath is the last...
7) Who dies in a chapter title?
Feanor?
8) Name three (or maybe four) pairs of people in the chapter titles.
Aule & Yavanna, Beren & Luthien, Thingol & Melian
9) Which chapter title contains a colon?
Of the Fifth Battle: Nirnaeth Arnoediad
10) Name the 14th chapter.

Aule, Yavanna, Thingol, Melian, Feanor (I think), Fingolfin, Beren,
Luthien, Maglor, Tuor, Earendil
> 3) Who is named twice in the chapter titles?
I'm having trouble with this one (my chapter list is clearly
incomplete); might it be Feanor? (Now watch him not be in any of
them...)
> 4) Which two people have chapter titles all to themselves?
Hmm. What does "all to themselves" mean? Tuor appear in a chapter
title that contains no other character names, for instance. But I
think that you're probably looking for Maglor and Turin. (I'm
_pretty_ sure that the Silmarillion's "Narn" condensation is named "Of
Turin Turambar", anyway.)
> 5) Name the first chapter.
"Of the Beginning of Days". (Unless it lacks that initial "Of"...)
> 6) Name the penultimate chapter.
Boy, I really ought to be able to do this one... is it "Of the Ruin of
Doriath"? That seems right.
> 7) Who dies in a chapter title?
Fingolfin (and that's a pretty long chapter title!)

Aule and Yavanna, Thingol and Melian, Beren and Luthien. You're going
to have to help me with the fourth. :)

Umm... Maeglin, Turin, Tuor, Beren, Luthien, Earendil, Aule,
Yavanna... Those are all I can remember offhand. But Feanor has to be
there somewhere, which leaves one more. Did Thingol get a chapter
title?

Maeglin,definitely... Turin Turambar would be my guess for the other
one.

You cunning devil, you know that no-one reads the first few chapters.
'Of The Coming of the Valar'? Pure guess.

'Of Tuor and the Fall of Gondolin' - I think that came after the Ruin
of Doriath, but I could be wrong.

"Of Men" is such a short title that I've always remembered its number, as
it feels so small and lonely without something to boost it. It's 12.
Which means that 14 is, um, "Of Beleriand and its Realms". I think.

Túrin Turambar (8/9 people got this)
Tuor (6/9 people got this)
Eärendil (7/9 people got this)
I can understand Melkor, Maeglin and Fingolfin being difficult to
remember, but I'm suprised not many people got Tuor.
Arvind and Bruce Tucker were most successful at this, getting 12/13
each. Only one person failed to get the required 10/13.
Other answers included: Húrin (twice), Finrod, Idril, Turgon (twice),
Maglor, and Maedhros. Maybe a bit of guessing going on there?
> 3) Who is named twice in the chapter titles?
Melkor (3/9 people got this)
Four people went for Feanor, for some reason. One went for Húrin, though
it is a bit difficult to appear twice when you don't even appear once.
> 4) Which two people have chapter titles all to themselves?
Maeglin (5/9 people got this)
Túrin Turambar (9/9 people got this)
Note that the person who failed to name Túrin in question 2, managed to
name him for this question...
> 5) Name the first chapter.
Of the Beginning of Days (7/9 people got this)
> 6) Name the penultimate chapter.
Of Tuor and the Fall of Gondolin (3/9 people got this)
A bit of confusion here. As many as three people went for "Of the Ruin
of Doriath". They had obviously forgotten Ulmo's words to Turgon:
"Longest of all the realms of the Eldalië shall Gondolin stand against
Melkor." (Of the Noldor in Beleriand)
> 7) Who dies in a chapter title?
Fingolfin (5/9 people got this)
> 8) Name three (or maybe four) pairs of people in the chapter titles.
Aulë and Yavanna (7/9 people got this)
Thingol and Melian (8/9 people got this)
The Sun and the Moon (1/9 people got this)
Beren and Lúthien (9/9 people got this)
Obviously everyone got Beren and Luthien. Congratulations to Neil
Anderson for getting "The Sun and the Moon"!
Three people failed to get the 3/4 required. Bit of a high bar there for
that question, sorry about that.
> 9) Which chapter title contains a colon?
Of the Fifth Battle: Nirnaeth Arnoediad (4/9 people got this)
I was impressed so many people got this. The Pun Master also couldn't
resist the obvious pun!
> 10) Name the 14th chapter.
Of Beleriand and its Realms (0/9 people got this)
I was disappointed that only two people tried to guess. Steuard Jenson's
"Of Men" was fairly close, but "Of the Nirnaeth Arnoediad" was way out.
So, the results! Two marks: one out of a possible 27 marks (one for each
answer), and one out of 10 (needing 10/13 for Q2, half marks for the
answers to Q4, and 3/4 for Q8).
Out of 27:
TT Arvind - 22
Neil Anderson - 21
Bruce Tucker - 20
Kieran Sanders - 19
Steuard Jensen - 18
Troels Forchhammer - 17
Ciaran Irvine - 17
Matthew T Curtis - 16
Shanahan - 15
Out of 10:
TT Arvind - 8
Neil Anderson - 7
Kieran Sanders - 6.5
Steuard Jensen - 6.5
Bruce Tucker - 6
Troels Forchhammer - 5.5
Ciaran Irvine - 5
Matthew T Curtis - 4
Shanahan - 3.5
So congratulations to the Pun Master!
For the sake of completeness, the chapter list:
1) Of the Beginning of Days
2) Of Aulë and Yavanna
3) Of the Coming of the Elves and the Captivity of Melkor
4) Of Thingol and Melian
5) Of Eldamar and the Princes of the Eldalië
6) Of Fëanor and the Unchaining of Melkor
7) Of the Silmarils and the Unrest of the Noldor
8) Of the Darkening of Valinor
9) Of the Flight of the Noldor
10) Of the Sindar
11) Of the Sun and Moon and the Hiding of Valinor
12) Of Men
13) Of the Return of the Noldor
14) Of Beleriand and its Realms
15) Of the Noldor in Beleriand
16) Of Maeglin
17) Of the Coming of Men into the West
18) Of the Ruin of Beleriand and the Fall of Fingolfin
19) Of Beren and Lúthien
20) Of the Fifth Battle: Nirnaeth Arnoediad
21) Of Túrin Turambar
22) Of the Ruin of Doriath
23) Of Tuor and the Fall of Gondolin
24) Of the Voyage of Eärendil and the War of Wrath
I hereby donate this list to whoever does the parasha page for the
discussions on 'The Silmarillion'. Plus the rest of the contents list in
the first post in this thread.

Confused us, too. (Fellow namesakes: if you don't mind my asking,
who's male and who's female? Me, female.)

Darn. Mixed it up with the 'Narn i hin Húrin' in UT.

No. Compare to "Of Maeglin" and "Of Túrin Turambar". Admittedly, I could
have phrased the question a bit better, along the lines of: "Which
chapter titles only describe a person?"

When you write a quiz? I'm setting myself up for a big fall here. It is
much easier to write a quiz than to successfully answer one...

Yer a girl called Ciaran? That's a bit odd if ye don't mind me saying
:-)
The female form is Ciara, usually.
For the trivia junkies:
Ciarán is the original Gaelic (the accent is called a "fada" and
lengthens the vowel in Irish. C is always a "K" sound just like
Sindarin, so phonetically it's properly pronounced something like
"Keer-awn". Various alternative spellings, mainly Anglicized versions,
include Ciaran, Ciaron, Kieran, Kieron and a few other random
combinations of vowels with a C at the start and an N at the end that
banks, phone companies and junk mailers keep putting on the address of
my snailmail...
Hey, if the Scands can ramble on about their linguistic curiosities,
so can the Irish :-)

> So how incomplete was your list?
Well, I deleted what I had, so I'm working from memory here, but
here's what I recall about what I had wrong:
3. I had "Of the Coming of the Elves", but I forgot the "and the
Captivity of Melkor" bit, which contributed to my failure to
identify him as being named twice (or once, for that matter).
5. I didn't have "Of Eldamar and the Princes of the Eldalie", but I'd
left a gap around here because I felt like I was missing an "Elves
in Valinor" title. (At one point, I tentatively wrote in "Of the
Noldor in Valinor", but that seemed at once too specific and too
similar to #15.)
6. I'd mistakenly identified this one as "Of Feanor and the Making of
the Silmarils" instead of "and the Unchaining of Melkor", hence
completing my "missing Melkor" error.
7. As you might expect from my mistake with #6, I forgot that "Of the
Silmarils and the Unrest of the Noldor" was a separate chapter
entirely.
10. I forgot "Of the Sindar" completely, too.
11. I actually split "Of the Sun and Moon and the Hiding of Valinor"
into two chapters for some reason.
16. I've already acknowledged my embarrassment on "Of Maeglin". I
wasn't sure where to put it, either.
17. I'd completely forgotten that "Of the Coming of Men into the West"
was a separate chapter from "Of Men", so I think I may have put my
"Of Men" somewhere in between here and its actual spot as #12.
(Hence my guess that it was #14.)
22-23. I reversed the order of the falls of Doriath and Gondolin
(obviously).
24. I don't recall if I remembered to include "and the War of Wrath"
after "Of the Voyage of Earendil".
No, I don't suppose anyone _actually_ wanted all that detail, but
hey. What this _does_ tell me is that I need to get back in practice
with these details! It's been a while since I've read Silm. cover to
cover. (But I should probably publish this research paper first...)

I don't mind, I'm a bit odd myself. My parents named me Kieran,
figuring no one on this side of the pond would know better; but I
changed it to Ciaran because I liked the look of it. Ciara was never an
option -- altogether too precious.

well, we scands can't disappoint, can we?
Ciarán has entered at least the norwegian namesphere. a boy i know was
named Tjerand. there are currently 50 namesakes for him in Norway. there
are also 18 people called Kjerand.
the "tj" and "kj" letter combinations are pronounced like sh, but
without the s sound. i guess that's what you get when you import the
"kia" bit from gaelic.
the d at the end of the name is not pronounced.
hah! even irish linguistics can spur a thread on scandinavian linguistics!

I didn't know this, but am not surprised. Ciarán won't be the first
Gaelic import of names to Scand. Kjartan and Njal come to mind.
