Just to verify: Mr.Spock served a dual assignment on the Enterprise
(under Kirk, that is) as both First Officer (ie. Second-in-Command) AND
Senior Science Officer? That's what I believe it is, but I'm not sure.
What's the backstory on that?

You are correct. He was Kirk's 1st Officer and because of his background
with Logic and the Vulcan Academy of Sciences, Kirk made him his senior
Science Officer. Commander Spock was also able to read data at a faster rate
than humans.
Peace,
Captain Kundalini

That's correct.
It's interesting to note that when Kirk emphasized Spock's
role/function, it was as Science officer. For example, Kirk never
called Spock "Number one", but in this scene from Naked Time (for
example) he addressed Spock as "Science Officer".
Kirk (frantically): "We've got to risk implosion... it's our only chance!"
Spock (doubtfully): "It's never been done."
Kirk (insistently): Don't tell me that again, Science Officer! It's a
theory! It's possible! We may go up into the biggest ball of fire since
the last sun in these parts exploded, but we've got to take that
one-in-10,000 chance!

OK, First (commenting on an earlier post in this thread) Spock did NOT
attend the Vulcan Science Academy. He choose to go the Star Fleet
Academy instead -- that was the source of his estrangement with his
father.
In the Naked Time Kirk had greater need of a science officer than for a
first officer to achieve the warp engine restart. Hence, Kirk's
emphasis on "Science Officer."
In other episodes, as long as Kirk was on board and in command there
was very little for Spock to do as First Officer, hence his role as
science officer. When the situation demanded, it was very clear to
everyone that Spock was next in the chain of command. It would seem
that on the series we saw, only Riker and Chakotay fulfilled the role
of "executive officer" in that we saw them being concerned with the
day-to-day mundane details of running the ship.
Now ask yourself -- what was Spock's rank. In the series he was always
refered to as "commander" yet in many episodes we see him wearing Lt.
Commander braids. Yes, I know you would still call a Lt. Commander
"commander" but his rank insignia seemed to jump up and down during at
least the first season.
Lastly, a question I've always wanted to ask the ToolPackinMama. You've
become famous for championing the Kirk-Spock relationship, but I ask
you to consider the Spock-McCoy relationship for a minute. In classic
movie cliche, when a male and female character bicker as much as Spock
and McCoy you just know they end up in bed together. Since the
male-female element does not seem to be a requirement for you, I wonder
if you would care to comment on this possibility?

Yes, if I remember correctly, Spock's actual RANK was that of Lt. Commander
(unlike Riker and Chacotay, who were full Commanders).
