The "Best TV Shows Of All Time"??
It's obvious from the list of the front-runners that most of those
voting must be young sci-fi fans.
Any poll that doesn't have "All In The Family" as one of the top TV
shows of all time is clearly skewed beyond hope of repair.

Your analysis is ignorant. Clearly nerds are voting, that much can be said.
But the fact that Xena: Warrior Princess is currently winning suggests that
for the most part, groups of nerds are stuffing the ballot box with joke
votes. I'm sure there is a thread in some NG somewhere that says, "Fellow
nerds, vote for Xena and blow everybody's mind!" I believe the votes for
Star Trek and Simpsons are legitimate, as only nerds would actually take
something like this seriously and would therefore vote for their favorite
show.

Not really. That humor was directed at a specific demographic at a specific
time in history. It does not have the staying power or perpetual relevance
of, say, the Stooges or Star Trek. A bunch of jokes about Meathead's
liberalism and Archie's 60's-70's era racial conservatism will never really
land with an audience again because it was so specific to that period. It is
just not funny if you weren't there. People who say this is the greatest
comedy series ever are the ones who were alive in that time period and of an
age where the jokes were relevant. It will be like in 20 years when I tell
my kids that The Simpsons was so super funny and then they watch it and
wonder, "What the hell is an internet?"

I don't define "The Greatest TV Shows Of All Time" as meaning they must
be perpetually relevant. Any more than a list of "The Greatest
Scientists Of All Time" must only include scientists whose theories of
science are still considered correct. Newton will always be considered
one of the greatest scientists of all time, even though his theories
have been superseded by Einstein's. Galileo was a great scientist, even
though we have learned a thousand times more about astronomy than he
ever knew.
A show that was groundbreaking *for its time* has to be considered great.

The fan phenomenon that Star Trek spawned remains to this day
unsurpassed, unequaled. The worldwide cultural impact of Star Trek
remains to this day unequaled. Not only does it stand up as art and as
entertainment decades later, but the tsunami like ripple-effect it had
on every human creature is still being felt.
No other TV show even comes close to Star Trek when it comes to IMPACT.
It was like when a comet hits the earth and alters the global
environment worldwide...except it was a positive change, not a negative
one. IMHO, Star Trek is the greatest TV show ever, period. The others
on the list with it don't even belong in the same class with it. It's
not even close.

Did Bonanza sire several spin-offs? Did Xena give rise to a series of
Xena movies? Neither one of those shows were what I would call
important. Popular, yes. Important, no. Entertaining, yes. Great? No.

Could be considered great, but certainly not the best. Certainly not as
great as material that can entertain everyone of all generations and isn't
tied to a time period.

Don't get me wrong, I do believe Star Trek belongs on any list of Top 10
shows of all time--because it was groundbreaking for its time.
Roddenberry could not have foreseen the cult following or the lasting
impact. But he sure knew he wanted to do a sci-fi TV show that would be
a major departure from previous TV sci-fi offerings, which were
basically kiddie shows. And he succeeded.
But Star Trek is the *only* sci-fi show on my list of Top 10 shows of
all time. The other shows on my list are from other genres.

It wasn't always sci-fi, but Twilight Zone belongs on that list, and I'd put
it ahead of Trek. I suspect the set of all shows with consistently better
writing is empty ..

Twilight Zone is on my list, but as you say it's not really a sci-fi show.
On the newsgroup alt.tv.lost, we've had a discussion about what genre to
call shows like TZ, Twin Peaks and Lost, which aren't quite sci-fi but
aren't quite fantasy either. Someone suggested they are "magical
realism," a term which has till now largely been applied to a genre of
written literature:
