McFadden returned at least one year before Roddenberry's death. My
guess is that he relented because the Pulaski character just wasn't
flying.

While I certainly despised Pulaski it was never anything against
Muldaur. She might have stayed if her character had been anything
worth watching- problem was the writing, not the actress.

Pulaski was a pale, bloodless copy of McCoy, not a clone. They had her
parrot all of his annoying traits (distrust of technology and
transporters, for example) but worst was her constant digs at Data for
the crime of not being human. Granted it was supposed to be a copy of
the McCoy/Spock dynamic, but with McCoy and Spock even when they sniped
at each other there was an undercurrent of friendship and genuine
respect. When Pulaski bitched about Data being an android she was
merely an obnoxious bitch.

FWIW, IMHO, McCoy and Spock basically tolerated each other because Kirk
loved them both, and he basicaly required them to get along, somehow.
I don't think McCoy and Spock would have ever been "friends" if Kirk
hadn't demanded it.
Whatever "respect" Spock and McCoy felt for each other was IMHO a
combination of respect for a comrade, and respect for Jim Kirk's wishes.

I think it was the having her pick on Data bit. Spock vs McCoy was an even
match. Pulaski vs Data was a schoolyard bully taking lunch money from the
kid that rides the short bus.
It's too bad, since Muldaur was actually an actress, and Pulaski a good
doctor, things that can't be said of McMuffin or Crusher.

Maybe in the beginning, but I think that they became friends through the
years.
Remember McCoy became very angry when the alien (Hanock?) that had taken
over Spock's body suggested that Vulcans would win a war. That's more than
just respecting Spock and his people. That was very much like: "don't mess
with my buddy."
Plus Spock entrusted McCoy with his very own Katra.

Muldaur was damned annoying like Darren's mother on Bewitched "Frank,
I've got a sick headache." I wish to God that she had died in that
lava pit instead of Tasha Yar.

Was she really conceived as a McCoy clone? If so, Muldaur should have
watched more episodes of TOS. McCoy was never such a sourpuss. He could be a
little cranky once in a while, but overall, he was a warm character. He got
on well with the other crew members (Spock excluded) and smiled once in a
while. Pulaski on the other hand, in addition to her dislike of Data, butt
heads with Picard; and generally acted like she didn't want to be on the
ship, hated her job, and was just biding time until retirement, which she
was also planning to hate.
Was Muldaur fired? Since she went directly to a juicier role on L.A. Law, I
had always assumed it was her decision to leave.

....... as I tell my wife.... I'd love to sleep with Doc Crusher, but if I'm
dying, I want Doc Pulaski!
