Robert Wise passed away at age 91.
He had directed many movies, including the sci-fi films "The Day The
Earth Stood Still" and "Star Trek: The Motion Picture."

And "West Side Story" and "The Sound of Music". Okay, those weren't SciFi,
but he's probably best known for them.

Well, not "LOTS" but there are several, especially "Metropolis" and "Things
to Come." I'd also include "Bride of Frankenstein" (and *do* when I teach

Assume that the Bible is a compendium of reasonably reliable
journalists' accounts of observed events. If so, then somebody
somewhere has got some *awesome* tech. It's not described because you
only see the results from the viewpoint of people who don't have a
clue how that it's tech, let alone how it works, but that doesn't mean
that it's not there.

In some ways it suggests to me an alien visitation, possibly during a
war.

I'm not belittling Mr. Wise or "The Day the Earth Stood Still" but have

Technically, that's a fantasy movie. And it came AFTER "The Day the Earth
Stood Still."

Yes, I'm quite aware of Metropolis, it's just my opinion that TDTESS was
the 1st Really Good Sci Fi Film. It stands out in my mind because it was
believable, the effects were good, and it could still happen, so the
story still stands the test of time. For me anyway.

Hmmm, both good points. Okay, how about Frankenstein? Great sci-fi and
definitely pre-dates any Wise directed movie.

I have to agree with other posters though that the earliest true sci-fi
classic would be Metropolis.

I'd grant you Bride of Frankenstein; the other two weren't that great.
Has there ever been as big a narrative cop-out as the end of Metropolis?

Visuals great for those two, Metropolis and TTC, but script and story
very so-so.

Metropolis was the first artistically/historically significant Sci-fi
film (and a fine film it is), but TDTESS is arguably the first that
really caught the public's imagination = good, for sure.

Generally agree, though it's a pity they changed the - very
relevant - ending from the novella the TDTESS film was based on! I
suppose they thought it was just too much of a shock for the lay
audience to take?

Anyone remember what the original ending was? :-)

BTW, Things to Come (1936) wasn't bad either. And was Forbidden
Planet after TDTESS?

The original novelette "Return of the Master" by (I think) Murray
Leinster, has Gort carrying the dead Klaatu in his arms into the
saucer receiving apologies from the army commander with something
on the lines of "We are so sorry for killing your master" (as in
the film). But Gort then turns round, draws himself up and replies
with "*I* am the master!"

You may not like the ending, but "Metropolis" is -- without question -- the
first SF epic and the greatest SF film of the silent era. Anyone who is
serious about SF film *has* to see "Metropolis" as one of the classics of
the genre. In spite of the happy ending, "Metropolis" has so much going for
it that it doesn't really matter.

: Yeah, I was gonna mention THINGS TO COME. Forbidden Planet is 5 years after
: TDTESS.

Also after "The Day the Earth Stood Still" but does anyone remember "This
Island Earth?"

(raises hand) Who could forget the major movie role for Russell Johnson
aka The Professor?

Good sci-fi for its time I'm sure, rather silly now of course.

Yes, a fun but essentially very silly film. Looks great, but it's not
*about* anything.

It's about time, it's about space, it's about two people in the strangest
place.

They cut out the main point of the book, which iirc imagined a "cargo
cult" situation with aliens showing up on Earth instead of the US army
arriving on Pacific islands. Besides, who can take it seriously after
seeing the Mystery Science Theater 3000 version?

I love MST3K, but I have to say that the MST3K movie is the WORST MST3K
*EVER*

The MST3K movie is SHORTER than the original This Island Earth!

And they cut the best line to mock, when the oh-so-brilliant lady scientist
says "This is our cat Neutron. We call him that because he's so positive!"

sigh
