He was my favorite character (at that time), and IMHO most original
Trekkies loved him the best. There was (as I recall) a huge and very
vocal SPOCK fan base, that eclipsed fandoms for the other characters at
that time - and it caused some anxiety among other TOS castmembers,
particularly Shatner, who understandably saw himself as the proper star
of the show.
Nobody forsaw or could have predicted the Spock phenomenon, but that guy
really struck a chord at the time. We were all effected by it. It was
HUGE.
Now that some time has mellowed us all, Spock takes his proper place as
a member of the crew, as originally intended. BUT at the time when it
was all new, he loomed especially large. That effect has passed, but
his historical prominence during that era must be remembered if we are
to remember ST's initial impact properly.
