True... But true for *any* single person, however high their IQ
score. Only we do have individuals in charge of things to a
certain extent, government officials and representatives, and I'm
saying I'd prefer that those individuals come from all walks of
life. High IQ scores tend to come from certain narrow demographics.

I guess so... But different groups have different interests, and
even an elite that was capable of any kind of arcane problem
solving might still end up serving its own interests, at the
expense of others, most of the time. So I'd rather have
representatives of all groups.

Does it help to point out that "worse" without a specification of what
was[1] measured is a purely subjective term?

Yeah, but you're going to have a hard time quantifying the amount of
lobbying that goes on, or ever has gone on.
My benchmark was the fact that the railroads, and to a lesser extent,
other high-bucks industries from (very) roughly 1850 to 1920 didn't
bother to hide the fact that they had politicians in their pockets, and
instead of suggesting improvements to laws, practically handed the
politicians the finished product to sign. Plus there wasn't much in the
way of organized resistance, so the lobbying tended to be one-sided.

Boyd, why is it that you never include attributions?
Is it that you believe it's irrelevant who says what - that the
individuality of participants in a Usenet conversation should be
abstracted away leaving nothing but a sort of impersonal husk: an
abstract object of type Conversant whose ID is a private member?
Or, alternatively, do you have a reason that isn't totally insane?

True. One thing that can be quantified is campaign distributions (no-one
would make one without expecting results back). And it seems to me to be at
a record high.

But there are two ways campaign contributions could be interpreted.
Version one, the legitimate version:
A1. Politician declared his policies.
A2. People and companies who support those policies help him get
elected.
Version two, the illegitimate version:
B1. Companies tell politicians what policies they would like to see.
B2. Politicain alters his policies to be similar to those the company
wants.
B3. Companies give thsa tpolitician money, saying that all they are
doing is A2.
Even in case A, donors are expecting results; but the politician will
deliver those results because (presumably) he believes in them. In cas
B, the money is twisting the politician as well as influencing the vote.

I don't understand people who think like this. I'm not attempting to be
superior here, it's just a statement of fact. Never in my life would I have
ever thought of Simpson's porn. My psyche is incapable of producing these
kinds of images on its own. But to think of it being used as a tool by
pedophiles and baby rapers to do their nasty deeds makes me see little red

Has anyone yet mentioned the classic bit from _Red Dwarf_?
"After perhaps ninety hours of watching the Flintstones, something
strange seemed to happen to Lister.
'Cat,' he grunted, without removing his eyes from the screen.
'Umf?' the Cat grunted back.
'Is it me, or is Wilma Flintstone incredibly sexy?'
The Cat swivelled and looked at him, then turned his head back
to the screen.
'Wilma Flinstone,' he said with quiet authority, 'is without
question the most desirable woman who ever lived.'
Lister looked at him, to see if he was serious. He was. 'That's
good,' he said. 'I thought I was going a bit whacko. What d'you
think of Betty?'
'Betty Rubble?' The Cat mulled it over. 'We-ell, I would /go/
with Betty,' he said, then added whistfully: 'but I'd be thinking
of Wilma.'
They both lapsed into silen teverie.
'What are we doing?' Lister said, finally. 'I think we've been
in the medical unit for too long. Why are we talking about making
love to Wilma Flintstone?'
'You're right,' the Cat agreed. 'We're nuts. This is an insane
conversation.'
Lister shook his head, sadly. 'She'd never leave Fred, and we
know it."
Someone had to mention it.

When I was 11 I was sent pictures of a woman and a horse, the sender sent
them to everyone he knew the email address of at school (he was in my
class). Back then quite a few people shared email addresses with their
parents (including me, but luckily I saw the mail first and deleted it, no
doubt I'd have been banned from the Internet for months had it been found
by my mum).
