Kirk was *not* a playboy who porked every female in sight. This myth is
very damaging because it's a malignant distortion that misses the point
of Kirk completely.
Kirk actually is very respectful of women, and he takes them seriously.
He takes love seriously. He does not play fast and loose with women's
hearts.
That's what he *should* be famous for.

<< Kirk is seated in the council chamber, in the midst of a small crowd
of his enemies, and he's getting lectured by Anon 7. Anon stands over
Jim and he waxes eloquent about the horrors of war: the destruction, and
pain, and suffering, n stuff. Jim's eyes light up. Anon, seeing that
talk of suffering gives Jim a hardon, asks what kind of monster Kirk is.
Jim looks around and takes stock of his situation. He's surrounded by
several angry men who are aroused, frightened, and desperate. He cannily
calculates that if he says or does anything they don't like, they might
be provoked into brutal acts, and he therefore next says what for him is
a perfectly logical thing to say:
"I'm a Barbarian", Jim declaims. "I plan to prove it to you"
[NOTE: Typical. What are you trying to do Jim, get your ass kicked some
more? That's what it looks like.]
[Special NOTE: I actually have a lot of sympathy for Jim at this moment.
He's like a teenage boy who is on a date with a girl who won't stop
talking about sex. Sex, sex, sex. She's been babbling all evening long
about how people are hypocritical about sex, and she thinks everybody
should have sex before marriage, and sex is a natural appetite, and so
on. A boy in such a situation can't be blamed for thinking that the girl
is hinting pretty strongly that she herself would like to have sex
pretty soon, and he naturally will become impatient eventually for that
to happen.]
Kirk is a professional warrior. He didn't go into this business because
he's afraid of it. Of course he's kind of hankering for it. Pain doesn't
scare him - he's the Pain Master. For guys like Kirk, battle is a kind
of a relief. It justifies all his years of training and anticipation. He
keeps his crew on their toes and all the weapons in top working order
precisely for days like this. He was ready before all the talk of war
began. He's ready when there has been no warning, so after a whole day's
worth of warning he's definitely ready to dance.
There's been talk of pain and suffering and destruction and warfare all
frickin' day! Of course Kirk's getting anxious. If you were him, you
would be too.
Ok, so Kirk's getting a little bit testy. He's been under a tremendous
amount of tension lately. What happens next shouldn't really surprise
anybody.>>

<<Cochrane suddenly asks why they gave the companion a feminine voice.
Kirk, not bullshitted out yet, bullshits some more. "The companion is
female", he says.
Spock, fed up with Kirk's bullshit, gives Cochrane the correct
explanation. "The companion loves you", he tells Cochrane.
Cochrane is horrified to learn that the companion is in love with him.
As long as it was only taking care of him, he was fine, but to think
that it actually was kind of making love to him - in its own
gender-free, vaporous way - completely freaks him out. He reacts
violently, with repugnance, as if he just found out his best friend is
really a Gay guy who's been carrying a torch for him for years.
"Do you know what you're saying?" he blurts. "For all these years I let
something as alien as that crawl around inside me...!?"
Kirk is mystified at the guy's reaction. "What are you complaining
about?" he wonders aloud, apparently thinking as he says this that
Cochrane is being silly and old-fashioned.
[NOTE: That IS a direct quote! I guess Jim doesn't mind alien things
crawling around inside of him... which certainly is a lucky thing for
Spock.]
"It's disgusting!" Cochrane raves.
"There's nothing disgusting about it", McCoy calmly retorts. "It's just
an alternative lifestyle." NO SORRY, what he really says is: "It's just
another life form. You get used to those things."
[NOTE: It's here, and it's clear: you should just get used to it.]
"You're as bad as it is!" Cochrane insanely responds, as if being
accepting of alien lifeforms and the people who have relationships with
them is as bad as being someone who is an alien lifeform in an
alternative relationship with a creature that is not of its own
species... or something.
Spock can't resist the urge to chime in on THAT subject, being the
product of an alternative lifestyle choice, *and* an alien life form who
likes crawling around inside of creatures not-of-his-own-species,
himself. He tries logic on the guy.
"Your relationship with the companion, for 150 years, has been
emotionally satisfying, eminently practical, and totally harmless. It
may indeed have been quite beneficial." Spock gently and reasonably
explains.
[NOTE: They are doing everything they can to assure the guy that they
don't judge him to be some kind of pervert. All three of them are doing
everything they can to soothe the man's outraged nerves. He's not
reacting to anything they said or did, he's reacting to his own
anachronistic feelings about the situation... like a total throwback...
which is in fact what he is.]
"Is this what the future holds?" Cochrane demands to know. "Men who have
NO NOTION OF DECENCY OR MORALITY!?"
Cut to Kirk, head bowed, who remains silent.
[NOTE: Count that one as a big, fat "No Comment" from Kirk! Guess he
knows better than to mention his own life-form-style right then.]
Cochrane marches out, radiating disgust.
"Fascinating!" Spock remarks, summing up everybody's feelings about
Cochrane's outburst. "A totally parochial attitude!"
Kirk smiles sadly, and nods a little.>>

You see? Now that's what I'm talking about.
Logical reasoning.
Supported by canon, no less. :)

It's not really the same thing. Laura's not in the FAQ for the content of
her views, it's the content of her character. She tells lies. She makes
promises and breaks them 2 days later. She pretends not to hear anything
she can't answer. She abuses anyone who disagrees with her. Any newbie who
comes along has to have fair warning what will happen to them if they get
sucked into this, and if they ignore the warning, too bad, so sad, they
can't complain.
This new arrival seems to be a bit defensive (not surprising, people often
are when they know they're on shaky ground), but she hasn't done anything
remotely similar to what Laura's done to get put into the FAQ. If she wants
to prove she can discuss this topic honestly, I'd give her a chance. I'd
even hope for the best. It might be a good thing if the focus of attention
on this topic passed to someone else.
