I was majorly into Who back in high school (To the point that
my friends and I made fan videos and such, which was kind of
impressive back in 1987), but the Colin Baker and Sylvester McCoy
years and the TV movie really killed my interest in it. I approached
the new series with a lot of interest mixed with nostalgia, but grew
to really love it as the weeks passed. I used to describe myself as a
"recovering Doctor Who fan," but I think the truth is that I was a Who
fan who desperately wanted GOOD Doctor Who again.
I'm really happy the show is back and popular again. It was
as if the UK viewing public remembered all at once just how much they
desperately missed having the Doctor around.

Yes, definitely. The season has a strong story arc that would
make no sense seen out of order.

Um, no. None that I can think of, anyway. The actual episode
titles (in order) are as follow:
1.) Rose
2.) The End of the World
3.) The Unquiet Dead
4.) Aliens of London
5.) World War Three
6.) DALEK
7.) The Long Game
8.) Father's Day
9.) The Empty Child
10.) The Doctor Dances
11.) Boom Town
12.) Bad Wolf
13.) The Parting of the Ways
What else are you downloading, aside form the New Dimension
Special?

Pretty much, yes. There are 3 2-part stories, so of course you would
want those in order. Also, some events in later episodes are built on
events in earlier episodes.

BBC did a half-hour companion series to Dr. Who last season, called Dr.
Who Confidential (Dr. Who ran on BBC2 on Saturday evening, and Dr. Who
Confidential ran on BBC3 immediately after it, except for "A New
Dimension" , which ran on BBC2 before the first ep as a special.
If you downloaded "A New Dimension", you should watch it before watching
the first episode, it is a retrospective of the history of the Dr. Who
series, and stars (among others) Tom Baker, Peter Davison, Colin Baker,
and Sylvester McCoy (all the living previous Doctors except Paul McGann,
who is shown in clips), as well as Christopher Eccleston and Billie Piper
(the Doctor and Companion for this season). It was also narrated by
David Tennant, who will play the 10th Doctor in the coming season.
The 1st (or 27th) season
Except for the two specials, the Doctor Who Confidential companion
episode should be watched after the Doctor Who episode, since it contains
spoilers for the episode. The final special is a 45 minute recap, put
together from clips from the preceding Dr. Who Confidential eps.
Doctor Who Doctor Who Confidential
A New Dimension (special)
Rose Bringing Back the Doctor
The End of the World The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly
The Unquiet Dead Tardis Tales
Aliens of London (Pt1) I Get A Side-Kick Out of You
World War III (Pt2) Why On Earth?
Dalek Dalek
The Long Game The Dark Side
Father's Day Time Trouble
The Empty Child (Pt1) Special Effects
The Doctor Dances (Pt2) Weird Science
Boom Town The World of Who
Bad Wolf (Pt1) Unsung Heroes and Violent Death

At one time, the US had one or two fairly daring writers who could pull off
a fairly decent adaptation of UK hits (Norman Lear pulled it off with All In
the Family. Also, Sanford and Son was a better than average adaptation, but
that also had Redd Foxx to work off of. Unfortunately, as time progressed,
the well kind of went dry (I seem to remember CBS trying to pull off an
AbFab remake to no avail).

There's *ALL* the episodes from the older shows, plus the movies, plus
all the novels, plus the webisodes (animated episodes on the BBC
website), plus the computer game, plus ...
Only then will you be a true Doctor Who fan. ;-)

American TV butchered the best situation comedy ever made: Fawlty
Towers. Miserable. I'd rather the networks just rerun the British
version.
Did you ever hear of the three Fawlty Towers remakes in the US? OMG
Snavely (aka Chateau Snavely), with Harvey Korman, in 1978.
Amanda's, with Bea Arthur in 1983.
Payne, with John Larroquette in 1999.

I've only seen the first four episodes of the original series, but the 2005
series that will be on region 1 DVD in March (Canadian release) was easy to
jump into. No prior knowledge is needed.

They tried a remake, with Cleese in a secondary roll.

Which is really an introduction to the next season and the new Doctor,
it doesn't have much to do with the last season's continuity.

although you can just wait till March. Sci-Fi Channel will be running

If you're referring to me, I'm actually Canadian.
As for the Doctor Who TV movie, that was actually a joint U.S./British
production.

As others mention, you should be able to download them with the various
peer to peer (P2P) groups, like the torrent sites. If you do Usenet
binary groups, go to alt.binaries.drwho and download away.
You should look through a few days worth of posts first (warning, this is
a very active binary group, with posts covering the full 3 decades of Dr.
Who). If they aren't on your newsserver, you can make a polite request
for them to the newsgroup.
If you see the 'Children In Need Special' and/or 'The Christmas Invasion'
(may also be called 'the Christmas special'), you don't want to watch
these until after you've watched the Eccleston season, and you'll want to
watch the Children In Need special before The Christmas Invasion. It's a
5 minute scene that bridges between "Parting of the Ways" and "The
Christmas Invasion". It was originally shown last November on the
Children In Need fundraiser as a special.

It was up and down, but apart from the first year of the 7th Doctor I
enjoyed most of the stories. Damn it, where's our Trial of a Timelord
box set?!?

Personality-wise, I liked ALL the doctors. Each was likeable in his
own way.
..
Story-wise, Doctors 1 & 2 & 3 (1960s & early 70s) are painful to
watch....
- lousy plots
- that are stretched to fill 6-8 hours of time, when they should be
only 1-2 hours
- watching wet paint dry would be more exciting
- and a good cure for insomnia
-----> Story-wise, I think the pinnacle of the Doctor Who program was
Doctors 4 & 5 (late 70s & early 80s). Good solid science fiction, with
good pacing, and interesting plots. I could rewatch Doctors 4 & 5
over-and-over again.
..
Doctors 6 & 7 devolve into stupidity. Doctor 6's first year is okay
(if you like dark, dark stories), but then the show was placed on
hiatus & when it came back, it appeared that all the intelligence was
stripped away..... leaving behind something resembling a children's
program (doctor 7 resembled a clown imho). A joke.
..
End of the Classic Series
..
REVIVAL:
And then there's Doctor 8 (the 90's Fox movie) which I thoroughly
enjoyed. Including numerous novels which are all considered official
history (per Graham Davies, producer).
And finally Doctor 9 (2005-6 series) which I thought was the best
storytelling to ever come out of the Doctor Who franchise. Nearly
every episode was a winner.

They aren't so bad when you consider the storytelling of the period. Many
people were use to radio and reading. It was one of the first SF shows ever.
But a lot of old TV doesn't work today. Try watching some older Hitchcock
episodes (or anything from the 60s and 70s). The plots are often predictable
and the characters are one-dimensional. Sometimes that worked, but sometimes
it just made the show boring.

Not everyone today suffers from ADHD, luckily, even if the poster
"videonovels [at] yahoo.com" does.

Oh yes. I'm sure you're correct that back THEN in the 60's super-long
serials were sufficient for the british masses. But I am of the
opinion that a story should stand the test of time. If Bob Smith of
Londontown 1600 has become "lost" too history. Too bad. I guess his
stories were just not good enough to be remembered. (shrug)
In contrast, we still remember Shakespeare.
I recently watched The Old Outer Limits from the 1960's. Man was that
dull. Nearly every story was the same "aliens are invading" plot.
Yawn. No wonder so many science fiction fans of the time boycotted TV,
and stuck to mainly novels.

Well I may suffer ADD, but at least I have manners. I don't go around
childishly insulting other people like you do. I suggest you go buy
the "Manners for Dummies" help book as soon as possible.

Yeah, and his correct spelling and grammar must be too much for

At least I have the manners you lack. You need to learn to stop
